get an iPhone and get a decent case, I’ve destroyed every phone I’ve had since I got rid of a good old Nokia 3210, but I put armour cases on my iPhones and I’m yet to break one, with the exception of 1 screen and that was because I had my keys in the same pocket and me jeans went tight when I sat in the car

The charge is between 4-5p a message. Considering I get totally unlimited messages in my phone plan for £15 a month all in, this is expensive. I have yet to find one of these providers with a realistic cost plan. I am going to look into the Samsung app that you can use from your computer.

Often your network provider allows to send sms from a web page. Using a wifi router the admin page, usually at http://192.168.0.1 allows to send and read sms. I haven't investigated if there is a similar way to do it direct from a mobile but there may be an app and your data provider may be able to give you the details you need.

I can understand that, I did say it was a business service rather than personal.
I have customers that have been using them for more than 15 years so I am happy to recommend them from a reliability point of view but I understand the economics are important. They actually offer more text based services which are useful for businesses
The main thing is they do provide the service that was asked for and it is then a commercial decision if the price point is right

Is there a big button or older style phone with bluetooth you can connect a bluetooth keyboard? I use a fold up bluetooth keyboard on my smart phone a fair bit.
