Testing old diesel engine

Hi, I've got an old diesel engine sitting in the garage, been there covered up for 5+ years.
It's a 1y out of a caddy van. Guy bought the van for his son, I was told by my mate the engine was a bit oil leaky but ran fine. The dad sourced a different engine and wanted to swap them just because it was a bit oily . This was done and I got the old engine as it would go in my vwt4 if that popped.
So I've had a spare engine sitting around.
I have not spun it for years.
Would it be ok?
Thinking of selling it on but don't want to sell a dud. How robust is an engine that has been sitting around this long? Cheers.

give it a turn over by hand ,, crankshaft pulley nut with a socket ,, if it turns over ok , odds on its as good as it was when you left it there ,,,, if it wont turn freely then a different strategy is called for

Can of diesel and a starting battery.

As long as its not seized, and it did run, reasonable to assume it will run.

Better to sit it to a pallet if you can.

With it attached somehow.

Even ratchet strapped.

Pretty much impossible to start up out of the vehicle. The fuel pump has an immobiliser module built in.

I'd apply 12 volts, personally.

Cant remember to be honest. Would it not be easier to hook up power to the starter and see if it will run for a few seconds on a wee breath of EasyStart?

Yes, but I do know people have knocked them off.

Thats a Bosch pump. It just has a stop solenoid. You could unscrew it and pull the plunger out. Reinsert without it and it'll fire up.
There should be a stop lever on the front of that pump to cut fuel when you want to stop it.

Just noticed the fuel pipes haven't been sealed up so you might find the diesel in the pump is likely gummed up.

Thats a Bosch pump. It just has a stop solenoid. You could unscrew it and pull the plunger out. Reinsert without it and it'll fire up.
There should be a stop lever on the front of that pump to cut fuel when you want to stop it.

Neh, I'm pretty sure that's the solenoids job.

The visible lever is accelerator pedal.

Agree it's a Bosch DP pump, pretty straightforward injection pump.

set it inside an old tire ,,, thats about the best thing for a few seconds running
