Testing Coil Pack

Can a coil pack be tested off the car with a multimeter? Basically this, black plug one off the 206:



I replaced the (original?) SAGEM one that died in Jul 2020. Think the replacement, Cambiare make, has gone t!ts up now.

Not impressed and told the factor. He's getting me a genuine Bosch for the same price I paid for the Cambiare.

I've swapped out the NGK plugs for Bosch too.

Appears to be not firing on one cylinder. Tried 3 different OBD2 readers, my cheapo Bluetooth dongle one, then the BiLs plug in Sealey one and his flash Launch scanner too. Only the Launch would connect to the ECU but even then wouldn't fully diagnose. Had to enter the VIN manually. Think as it's a 2000 model it's a bit early.

Possibly needs to go on a scope for the coil waveforms and signals...

I’d put the oscilloscope on the inputs and one of those light up spark plug extensions on each of the plugs in turn. If you have signal in but no spark out the module is goosed.

Always kept spare coil packs when we ever scrapped a car as it is quicker to try a known good one than testing a suspect item. Have had faulty injectors on 206s as well as an intermittent cutting out that turned out to be a broken wire inside the loom

Known many a Peugeot tu engined car cack injectors.
Probably replaced 25 or so now.

Wouldnt be surprised if the coil pack isnt at fault.

I had a coil pack die or so I thought, on close inspection it was shorting to earth through a tiny crack in the plug cap. I only discovered this after buying a new coil pack. Bought a new lead and plug cap assembly and it worked fine, it's now hibernating in a random box in the garage.

Intermittents are always fun to find.....

First time it happened the AA fitted a new coil pack , it would die out but restart instantly, possibly once a month initially , several times it was looked at but the fault wouldn’t play ball. 6 months or more later I was lucky to induce the fault in the workshop

New Bosch coil pack just fitted. Imho it's "better" but not perfect.

Still a little "chuggy". Can't think of a better term. In fact as you pull off, the best way I can describe the engine sound is it goes "dug..dug..dug..dug..dug..dug.....". Not as bad as it did before. Then it sounds a bit smoother. It is though definitely better. Is that because it's Bosch?

As it has been stalling on occasion at junctions etc I'm up for changing the injectors. Had a quick look on YouTube and it looks a doddle on the TU engine.

Motor factor quoted about £55 for a Bosch injector. Not sure if that's +VAT or whether I'll get a discount. Can only ask! Might as well change all 4 given the age.

Daft question (and I can't see how) but could a failing injector affect the coil pack?

I watch this guys youtube channel... guy is amazing, New York is a bit far away to get him to look at yours but watch the video linked... skip to 13:40 where he is looking at the current ramps for the coils I just wish I knew what he was talking about

What do the plugs look like now and when it is going dug, dug, dug?

Not a silly question and no I didn't. Presumed they were pre-gapped. I'll go and do it now and report back.

As for looks, the NGKs that came out looked "alright" imo. Not burnt, not wet etc.

While you have the feelers out it might be a good idea to check the valve clearances? Tight tappets will cause loads of strange running problems

Can I ask when you last changed the fuel filter? I've had some issues with my car in the run-up to Christmas and one of them was a bit similar - it'd run, but not quite right, and sometimes when stopping at a junction it would just stall, but then start again when I turned the key. It did seem to be the case that swapping the filter had cured it, but I also had to swap coils and spark plugs to get it back to "normal" - the plugs were about ready for replacement and the coils were under warranty. It's still not quite right, but it's as good as it was before it started playing up. My next step is to clean the injectors out.

Do recall seeing Edd China visually testing the spray pattern from injectors by lifting one injector ot at a time and directing into a pop bottle. Start car and look at spray pattern as it sprays fuel into the bottle. Not sure how easy it would be to do on the 206 ?

One plug gap was a little tight. Fixed that, all at 0.9mm now. I'd say it runs better again but still not right. I took the heat shield off and used an IR thermometer on the exhaust manifold. Very rough but the port nearest the o/s is about 100degF lower. Pictures left to right, o/s to n/s:

SWMBO informs me she took a run out today, about 6 miles and it drove rough. Parked up, did some shopping. Coming back the same 6 miles, in her words "It was nearly like it used to be!"

Similar yesterday, rough going, better coming back

Could that perhaps indicate something temperature related?

Random thought, tappets. If "loose" when cold and expanded and "tight" when hot. Ditto the pistons in the bores.
