testing a welder/geny output

Hi all, just had delivery today of a second hand genset mpm 7/250 welder generator, I haven't tried the welder side of it yet but tried a 4 1/2" 240v grinder and the generator had to be set to the max to operate correctly.

So Iam wondering if its producing enought power, do you have to wait for the geny to build up power or is it instant.

Also the voltage meter only show 100v again only run for a minute.

Any hint / tips will be of help

Usually they are set to max for AC.

Some will idle down until they see a load.

You might be able to get a manual from here.

Hi, I've email genset as the website does not have a manual for the serial number I entered.

I'll let it run for more than one minute next time as see if the free volts increase also have a go at the welder.

Hello jools,

there should be a very short time before full voltage after the generator is up to speed.

They are governed so as load increases the speed stays pretty constant, i.e. the throttle is automatically opened. Have you a two voltage selector switch, i.e 110 and 220?. It sounds as if it might be selected to 110?

Does your grinder have a 'soft start'?
Dont know much about the genset side of things, but i assume its similar to the Mosa we use.

With revs set at tickover, tools with a soft start mechanism, will run, but very slowly, about 50% of speed.
For some reason, it doesnt sense that it needs to rev up, i assumethat the soft start increases current draw slowly over a second of two, fooling the genny.

As for power, pretty much as soon as the engine has stopped spluttering, and running smoothly, you should have power.

Hello Hitch,

do some power tools have a soft start? Even so, I would expect the generator to react to the load?
It was the comment about the generator voltmeter reading 100 volts that caught my eye.

I'll check for a 110/240v switch geny is an old genset 7/250 diesel waiting to hear back.

I'll try the welder tomorrow I've got some 4mm rods is there a method to tell if its producing enough amp/volts or if it burns the rod smoothly its okay??

Jools Hello; I understsand the 120/240V. , But what is 7/250 mean ??

Also I know your electrical wiring is Different from mine here in Canada, but trying to run a 240V., grinder on 100Volts ain't going to work !!

Yes, If it's burning your Electrode Smoothly, you're Fine !!!

We have a couple of gensets - Power is there more or less straight after starting it - the only issue is if you try running say a 9 inch grinder while someone is weling - not enough juice for both!
Ours has 110v and 240v sockets, no problems with running power tools from them
