Teng Tools Question

Just purchased one of these Teng universal impact joints (not from this shop, just used the link as the picture is clear)

My question is the product appears to be totally useless, there is no ball bearing or friction ring on the anvil to retain a socket, so they just fall off or fly off if used on an impact wrench. I have emailed Teng but had no reply.

Anyone know why it's manufactured like this?

Cheers, I might be missing the point here, but that retaining ring and pin idea appears pointless.

A) you would need to purchase 100's for each socket as the one that fits a 10mm socket is not going to fit a 36mm socket.

B) who works in a job where they have the time to mess around like that every time you need to swap sockets?

I'd assume that the vibration from impact drivers will quickly knacker a sprung ball retainer, so something more positive is needed in an industrial setting.

ive used extensions loads of times with an impact gun an no problems with the ball or spring

Its no problem, the pin can be virtually anything and slip an O ring onto the groove to stop the pin falling out..

I have a similar style Snap On jobbie, it's over 20years old but it does have the little ball bearing socket retainer. Has survived use on impact guns and air ratchets.

Loads better than the usual type as you can get into some really awkward spaces, bend the wobble drive to the required angle, feed it in with a load of extension bars and you can usually find the bolt by feel and slip the socket over it

Impact socket drivers/accessories do normally have something to retain the socket, normally a friction ring or a spring loaded pin.
I think I'd be asking for a replacement or getting a refund, then buying a normal one. Horrible when sockets won't stay on due to worn mechanisms, never mind a new tool.

Yep, it's going back for a refund. To be honest I already have both the snap on 3/8 & 1/2 adapters that both came with a ball bearing and both work really well. The only reason I bought this is I saw it and thought that would be useful for trips to the scrap yard. Won't be wasting my time buying any of there other tools!!

Often used in industrial and production environments when one size socket may stay in place all the time. Useful when access is limited as little chance of the socket dropping off never to be seen again.

If you search amazon they have the o rings with the pin built in
So slightly faster
But not as quick as the ball
Plus if you buy the correct sockets for use with the pin the conecting end will be the same size from 10mm to 32mm
The same on crome sockets
One of the reason i much prefer german tools over snapon as they dont do this and it hinders use in tight places would always prefer gedore stahllwille hazet and so on over snapon for this reason among others
Also in some applications think aero engineering you really want zero chance of socket falling off the extension even the ball bearings arnt 100% reliable

Its not supposed to have a retaining ball, you can tell which sort its primarily intended for by the recess that locates the O'ring that retains the locking pin.

Stops the socket coming off when you pull the gun away.
Quite common on industrial gear.

I just checked my sockets and everything in the 1" and 3/4" drive sets is the pin/o`ring type fixing.

And both the 1" drive nut guns are pin type fixing.

I have this on a gun. PITA if you swap sockets often but there is zero risk of them coming off accidentally.

There are also locking extensions where you pull a sleeve back to release. Quick and easy to use and yet holds them perfectly.

Yep, thats exactly what I use.

Saves much inconvenient droppage.
