Temporary storage for heating oil (kerosene) ?

The installers who did our Warmerhome grant assisted new install wouldn't remove ,store then transfer the half tank of heating oil back . But a quick visit to the people who brought our oil to us saw them they say ," No problem .. £30 ...we'll pump it in to our 45 gallon drums next to where the new tank is going ,then once the tank is installed pump it back through a filter telling me I'd lose about 40 litres of really dirty stuff with water in it .

Just make sure that if the installers arrange the first fill of the tank that it is only 100 / 200 litres or so & not a full tank .
Recently saw that our oil supplier now has a dedicated bunded tank & pump arrangement on the back of a Transit as they are being asked to change a lot of single skin tanks over to the very latest bunded ones able to handle E10 bio oil Plus the Welsh assembly have made it a condition of getting filled by an oil supplier that they can no longer put E10 into anything but bunded E10 compatible tanks .

As above, contact their oil supplier. Most will offer a service to empty & refill oil tanks. As well as for fitting new tanks quite a few around here use this service if moving house & take their tank of oil with them!

How common is E10 kerosene? We only have an old, plastic, single skin tank.

I'm sceptical about a lot of the things said by some oil suppliers tbh.
Certas this way I won't deal with - they seemed to have a policy of getting their delivery people to condemn tanks - mor0e as a way to drum up business than anything else.
Yes a SS tank should be replaced, but I think it's only businesses that NRW are really leaning on so far.
As for compatibility with E10 (bio content 10% fuel) then I'm sceptical that any thermoplastic tank would be susceptible to failure from that also.

I recently replaced my plastic tank. When it had about 300 litres in it I jacked up the supply end by about 100mm and left it for a few days for any gunge to slide down the low end where there was suitable hole for a rotary pump. I pumped out 20 litres from the bottom of the tank into a clear plastic drum, left it over night and did the same again. That got the bulk of the gunge out. The rest was pumped into a 205l oil drum, the suction end of the pump being kept about 50mm from the bottom of the tank. The old tank was shuffled out, it still had a bit left in it, and the new tank was put in place. The kero from the 205l drum was pumped into another 20 litre container to make sure it was uncontaminated before being poured into the new tank. What was left in the tank was drained and put in the 205l drum with most of the good stuff poured off the top of the dirty 20l drums and left to settle, then pumped out 20l at time and checked before being added to the big tank. The manky stuff had the water drained of and was strained though an old tea towel and is being used for cleaning stuff, slightly less than 5l IIRC, and that's because I needed some.

It goes though a tiger loop with an integral filter before it gets the burner unit.

Possibly , I didn't bother finding out as a new tank was included in our complete oil fired heating system renewal
Just been trying to find out a few minutes ago some more info via a chat session with a big Welsh heating oil supply concern .
I'm told a current domestic plastic bunded tank only has a life expectancy of 10 years From their link info things keep going back to OFTEC fuel regulations which the Welsh assembly have taken on board made them in platinum then gold plated them as per everything that comes out the wooden onion WAG building in Cardiff . Just seen the last chat from the heating oil people ..do you know that type of Bio heating oil is being used ..so from that question it would seem to me there is a known degradation problem with plastic tanks . Heating oil people have just closed the chat.

For the life of me it seems I cannot escape the merry go round to get a decent answer unless I 'm willing to dip my hands in my pockets , being a Yorkshireman my arms are far too short to reach the bottoms where my money is .

Regular Kero and Red I believe has been allowed to be up to 13% or something Bio for years without it being declared as "bio-fuel"... so there's s good chance we've been putting some bio-content into our tanks for years already.

I have a bunded thermoplastic tank that I blagged used off a job that is probably best part of 10-years-okd already.... but its bunded (double-skinned) so I'm not gonna worry about it. If/when it equalises the inner tank & bund level (so I know the inner is leaking) - I'll concern myself with it then
