Telwin Bimax 182 wire feed speed

Hey all,

I have a Telwin Bimax 182 that I have converted to euro torch using information I got from this site (so thank you for that) but I have a question about its wire feed speed.

It has the 1-10 wire feed dial and as I was trying to dial in my welding by setting to 1 then running for 60 seconds then measuring the wire that came out so i could gather the meters per min info.
I noticed that if I set the power switch higher the wire feed sped up without me adjusting the wire feed dial.

Is this normal behavior for this welder? I have never noticed this before now and it makes all my wire feed speed calculations i did at power setting 1 wrong.

This is a quote from the mig welding guide on here......
"More expensive welders normally have automatic adjustment of wire speed - the speed is changed by the welder when the power setting is altered. On my Portamig 181 a setting of 5.5 is good for both low and higher power settings, and the wire speed knob is only there to allow tweaking"

Idk if this is by design on your welder though - but sounds likely. I normally just tweak wire speed for a particular job until I hear the weld singing - this is normal and it's difficult to set up accurately by numbers alone.

Yeah I saw that and it did make me wonder but I have the instruction manual for the welder and it does not mention that it does that. If someone who owns one can maybe chime in that would ease my mind that its not something I have done when converting to euro or that the PCB maybe has an issue.

Ok. But the real test is whether it welds ok at each power position on the switch. Just put it through its paces on different thicknesses of scrap and see how it performs.... bearing in mind it's a 30amp min machine so that will limit performance (ie blow through) on thin material even with 0.6mm wire

Yeah it welds fine. I just used it to rebuild a flail mower. My question is the wire speed and how it is effected by the power switch.

Hello I've just joined the forum, I'm not a professional welder and use my welder for car restoration. I've recently bought a lightly used Telwin 182 Turbo which is not working correctly. I've found the instruction manual but its not very informative. As I was used to a simple Clarke Welder with a min/max and 3 power settings could anybody help ?
What does the turbo control do? The welder works but only with wire control feed above mid point and the power at max. The little orange light doesn't come on. I suspect the wire feed motor is faulty as it seems to speed up and slow down during...

power for the wirefeed motor is taken from the DC welding output, rather than from a separate transformer/rectifier auxiliary power supply. Therefore, by design, the wire speed will increase when the welding output voltage is stepped up through the six power ranges.

Thank you for your reply and clarification. So in essence the wire feed control knob is just for fine tuning and the welder automatically adjusts the wire feed to best match the amps used.

I will do a test just for my own curiosity to see what the speed difference is between power settings and a set (good) wire feed rate. Will be helpful to know for when using the welding calculator on this site.
