Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum and would appreciate some advice please. I am currently restoring a series one Landrover. Now that I have reached the point where I want to repair the chassis. I am having doubts as to whether my Telwin 130/1 mig welder will be up to the job. I bought the welder some years ago secondhand. It performed well for a while until I started having problems with the torch. To cut a very long story a bit shorter. I will list what happened
went to a welding supply shop
they ordered new swan neck
swan neck didn't
ordered another swan neck
swan neck didn't fit
I left the welder for their engineer to look at
got it back with new swan neck fitted but they had lost electrical contact strip for trigger and said they wouldn't be able to get a new part for me
took welder home and made a replacement contact
gas still not right, so i bought a regulator and contract for gas bottles, no more disposable bottles yayyy
welder working well until the other day when I noticed gas escaping through torch tip without me depressing the trigger
I presume that I am best replacing the torch assembly including feed as there is no gas solenoid in the welder itself. so the problem must be the gas valve in the torch.
Phew, I tried to keep story short ! Anyway my questions are...... Is my aged Telwin 130/1 mig welder upto welding Landrover chassis ? Is it possible to upgrade this machine in any way, the new swan neck has standard tip and can take 0.8 wire although the new part will have mini tip on it (yuk) I think or am I best investing my money in a new welder, maybe a 150 at least. Landy chassis is 3mm steel but there will be occassions where I will need to weld to a thickness of around 5-6mm.
Thanks for reading. Sorry it's been a bit long winded !! I look forward to hearing from you
Regards to all
