Tekfast screws to hold sheet metal together prior to welding?

I bought a box of tekfast screws to hold the sheet that can't be clamped with my clamps. They have to be put in with very little torque otherwise the 18swg steel strips. But they work, however after putting the screw in a few times. Even with little torque the sheet gives. Any better screws? I am just about to get some M4 bolts n nuts and try those.

Why can't the sheets be clamped? Surely all these holes from the screws would need welding up then presenting more of a chance of distortion?

Would "cleco's" be any good if you are putting holes in the sheet anyway, or even rivets and drill out after.

I used normal self - tappers a lot when I did my VW bus (pre internet). Needed to drill holes for them though.

What are you using to put them in? Drill, rather than impact driver might help (if that’s what your using).

Clecos would have been wonderful, but ££.

You are re-using them into the same holes? If so, then I'm not surprised they strip as they are really a one time use only.

i do on occasion use tek screws with an 8mm hex head but prefer my 1/8" clecos, bought 30 years ago and used on many cars and still work perfect :thumbup:
