Teflon coatings?

Anyone know about Teflon coatings?

I have a dehydrating machine, it has stainless steel mesh trays, they work great for most things, but anything sticky like liver needs teflon sheets down first or it'll stick like crazy

But... the teflon sheets are a pain and they need clipping down so they don't blow around inside the machine... I've googled but I'm not finding much and/or it's crazy money for teflon coating steel

There's 46 trays that are 810x530

I could use 23 trays 810x1060 instead

Anyone have any ideas?

I assumed I could just make new trays and send them off for coating, a bit like a galvanising service... But prices I've seen are phone numbers targeting aerospace etc

How about metal baking trays, coated in Teflon? Certainly not too expensive.

The further east the country is after Germany, the cheaper such services are. Coating thin tin baking pans with a layer of PVDF, etc. in general, it never cost space money.

I needed a ptfe coated funnel on one project. Gave it away for ptfe sintering.
It was quite expensive and it also needs special blasting before afair. Base metal was 1.4301.

This lot apply coatings to baking tins etc. They do all kinds of coatings for the food and other industries.

The coating is called something like Xylan 8401, it's a thin green layer, looks like it's sprayed on, it's quite hard wearing and stuff really doesn't want to stick to it, I'm very impressed. It was about 300 quid for a dozen, fist sized parts though.

That is small, your hands are quite small.

if you ask someone about "Teflon coatings" you are asking about one specific product. It might be better to ask about fluoropolymer coatings, and that would encompass a range of related products, any one of which might suit your needs. I'm thinking primarily of a material called perfluoroalkoxy (PFA), which has all the nice properties of PTFE, and a few more thrown in for good measure.

There are also Parylene coatings, which are stable up to 350degC, and FDA approved for various medical applications.

Not necessarily cheap, but not aerospace prices either, at least that was the case when we last had some o-rings done for a low friction coating.

Soon I have to have an interesting job (hardware, laboratory devices) in R & D on new thermoplastic fluoropolymer coatings.

I will consider the reincarnation of the aerosol can, based on the results of the work.

PTFE does not melt, but eventually decomposes to give off some extremely nasty decomposition products. If that product did contain PTFE, then it must have been in a matrix with an adequately low melting point. There has been quite a lot of progress since the 60/70's on fluoropolymers.

That said, there is growing recognition of the problem of "forever chemicals". These are fluorocarbons which will last forever in the environment and they are largely the precursor chemicals which are use in the manufacture of PTFE and have been around for over 60 years now. It's now admitted that such chemicals are present in trace levels in many water supplies and in many peoples' blood. People living next to some of the early plants making PTFE in the 50's have all kinds of medical problems.

You'd have to wonder whether a time might come when the manufacture of fluoro-polymers becomes restricted. DuPont make a fluoro-rubber called Kalrez which is more expensive than gold on a weight-for-weight basis, and I guess that is in part to do with meeting environment and H&S requirements?

Yes, DuPont have been fined several times over the years, but compared with their profits, the fines are just peanuts. I may have seen Dark Waters; I've certainly seen a lengthy documentary on the topic. Apparently, the "forever chemicals" are now showing up in the UK, and they will progressively become global. I think one of them is referred to as "C8" - eight carbon atoms, and maybe one oxygen and then whatever number of fluorines.
