Technique for reducing weld distortion

Sounds a good plan. If you had to go out and buy steel that was perfectly straight it would cost a fortune.

the usual method for these type of machines is to do minimal welding on the top rails and then level/straighten them together using an epoxy and series of dams

alternatively yo could try to make a massively strong subframe, straighten the tops as best you can then tack the top rails but they will still distort too much imo

Will have to find the vid? the guy who made his out of mild steel used expoxy on the rails of the bed,think he used 10mm aluminium flat bar and expoxied em down then machined the aluminuim after the expoxy cured.
