It'd probably be easier for him to just put a nut on the rod rather than use a spacer dedicated. That way he can tweak the height if needs be and then clamp it tightly in position with the nut, (same method as used for clamping gib screws/bolts once the adjustments are done), or slip a bit of tube over it for extra strength once he finds his perfect height, and then clamp it all down tight with the nut.
It may be that the movement requires a chamfer too, in fact even a tapering washer under the bolthead, in case the hexagon restricts movement.
