Band seal is hot pouring and used with an iron. Just clean out the cracks with a broom. Brush...heat..pour and drag the iron...

It seems to be when they went from using coal tar to modern synthetic alternatives. It doesn't smell right anymore.
And they are constantly reducing the mixing and delivery temperatures. I don't know if you have had warm lay delivered yet, utterly unusable for hand lay, the lads complain like hell.
Then is local authorities banning band sealing joints after a couple of cyclists slipped on it.
Physically very difficult now to do a good job.

1-2 weeks is pretty good around here - record currently stands at under half an hour. Council van was going down the road filling in pot holes, once they'd cleared the way the silage contractors reverted to using that road* (they'd been forced off by the van mid-cut), didn't last much longer.
I was at the southern manufacturing show quite a few years ago and there was a tarmac manufacturer there. They said there was an additive that could be added to make the tarmac last much longer - it did add a fair bit of cost but none of the councils were interested in it because it affected this years finances and by using it it meant they did people out of a job in subsequent years

How good it was I have no idea but shows the technology is there just politics meddling in it as per usual.* around here the tractors and carts have become so big they can't pass anyone else on the road let alone each other so they tend to set up long circuits if necessary so at least the tractors are always going in the same direction in a loop. One hilarious situation was that a mate had had to get his dozer into a farm where silage was being carted to. Too big to fit up the track to the farm so it got dropped off the other side of the valley at a neighbouring farm and driven over the edge to make its own road to the farm. A couple of weeks later the contractors were in carting silage from the drop-off farm to the destination farm. They had a <1000 yard road down the valley and back up - unfortunately it was at a 1 in 1 slope most of the way down one side and not much better up the other side. They ended up having to have a 13 mile loop instead to tip the silage.
I will just get a block of bitumen heat it in an old pan and pour it into the cracks.
Without the proper tools you would be better off using the tape. Lay it down and just wave a blow torch over it. All nice a tidy.

Might be why that local contractor was applying the black beauty grit on top.
Is that where you have to go 10mph to stop stones flicking up. Loads of stones don't stick and a cleaner comes along and brushes them all up a week or two later?
I have been looking for a product that can fill thin holes about 8 inches across.
The main reason is I often need to wheel things up the drive and the wheels stick or go offline.
I don't think I can get the whole drive repaired due to cash flow and next door just building an extension AND its a shared drive. Just doing one is not going to be easy due to leaving a joint in the middle of the drive.
So worst cash I would like to fill the shallow potholes.
I think they are coming up really shallow as the drive was re surfaced but they skimped/ cheated on the thickness of tarmac needed.

My sister in law has just come off her bike & broken her elbow due to an unsealed joint breaking up. She was turning right & where the two halves of the road had been tarmaced separately it had broken out & she dropped the wheel into the groove It left. I Understand it was about 3 inches deep. Bit like the old joke “there is a hole in the road & the council are looking into it”

Yes thats the one.
For shallow pot holes the absolute best stuff you can get is viafix in the tubs not the bags.
This stuff is the best cold lay going. Far and away better than any of the ultracrete products. And the stuff in the bags from builders merchants is hardly worth bothering with.

Yes you are correct...thankfully for me I am retired from it now but occasionally I go help out my friend who runs his own business...I wouldn't want it anymore .
No but I don't think hot poor would do much better. You would have to ask @God mode restorations as we only deal with cracks and joints before they get that. Once they get that size they would be a serious defect and cut out 100mm wide with hot lay put in.

They've been using that crap around here for years, just sling it in a hole and drive the van over it on the way to the next job.
Stuff cracks back out 6 months later on the first frost and it takes some chunks of the knackered tarmac around it with it when it goes, the holes just get bigger.
They should never have approved that for council repair work apart from temporary, emergency repairs tbfh.

I could use some clarification of "Tar".
When working on building drawings, I was told that there is oil based and coal based "Tar" and roofers get a higher pay when removing (and possibly applying)
one or the other as it's more irritating to the skin.
Roofing, I see they had a trailer tank with large propane tanks, and a engine driven pump with a pipe leading up to the roof, "Tar" came in round shapes maybe 12" dia x 24" long, wrapped with paper. Tar kettle operator would strip off the paper, and then chop up the blocks with an axe before tossing into the tank.
The smoke was irritating as it was outside my window for a week at least.
Tarring a road involves a tanker trailer, maybe heated, and then gravel is applied.
Not nearly the eye burning smoke.

If it's failing it either isn't viafix or not prepped properly.
Via fix for small patches is 100% better than hot lay. It's brilliant stuff. When the council was using viafix they weren't returning to potholes. Ultracrete also comes in a tub and by comparison is useless. Since swapping to ultracrete the pothole problem has gone through the roof aas it doesn't last.
Coal tar has been banned due to it containing carcinogens modern tarmac or asphalt and paving related products are bitumen based or possibly some now being synthetic

Any roofing supplier has 40 or 20kg kegs of bitumen. i have seen it on ebay too so easily got.
