Taps, not those taps the other taps.

I got this set of M5 taps off an ebay seller of 'drills in the UK,' supposed to be taper, plug and bottom , the seller reckons there is nothing wrong with them. I think there flipping well is .

They are what is accepted as the three types sold on the flea bay.

grind the end of the left hand one and it will be a plug

Grind off the ends square for more clearance in the bottom of the hole ?

Smaller sizes are usually like that, just had a look a a set of M5 I have:

The black oxidation would give the impression that they are carbon steel and if so not usually as nicely finished as HSS.

Is he American? The traditional designation over here is Taper, Second, Plug.

I've never seen pointed bottoming taps before, maybe this is what you get on the cheap end ?

It only takes a minute to grind one flat so I'm not losing any sleep over it.

I have, and now that you brought it up, the flat ended ones have a leetle center drilled in there.
I suppose the pointed ones use a reverse center (or cone center) as a cost saving move.

I don’t see the problem on the bottoming tap the pointed tip is probably the same angle as the drill so threads will go to the bottom so the tip is there to protect the threads when stored.

Normal in the smaller sizes, same as dormer, guhring, titex etc. grind the point if you need the extra threads.
