Two things.
One, as almost everyone else has said, a 3/8 die would be too big to cut a thread on that O/D. I have a suspicion those can't have been BSP dies.
In case you hadn't already sussed this Georgie (despite being told), the BSP sizes refer to the nominal bore of a pipe, not the O/D.
And secondly, using sand for blasting is bad for you. Enjoy the silicosis, chap.

Today a mate dropped in with a couple of dies borrowed from his neighbour who was a retired machinist,the dies were a 1/4" and 3/8" BSP,I had to thread the pipe there and then as he said the old guy wants em back straight away.

So tried the 1/4" and it didn't even attempt to to cut the pipe,it just would not get a grip of the pipe even with a chamfer on the end.
Tried the 3/8" with no effort at all and made a clean thread on the pipe,as I stated earlier I'm rubbish when it comes to tap&dies but I just knew it a 1/4" would not do it and if I'd have paid out for one then I would have wasted money on it as it should have been 3/8".........what say you now,Jester?

Look at this chart George, how on earth can a 3/8 BSP die cut a proper thread on 13.04mm stock??!!
No idea what die you used but it can't have been 3/8 BSP.
I think you owe the unoffended Jester an apology.

cant comment on the threading but the sand will be ok as he is going to wet blast it so no dust no silocosis the best thing he can do is get some decent mesuring gear a zeus book to calculate the correct dies for the size pipe and all will be revealed

Also ............. now that you've threaded the pipe, you need to get the same thread (??????)on whatever it's fitting to

i did notice i presume hese going to fit it on the end of a pressure washer for sandblasting and not just blow through it hence wet sand and no dust = no health risk apart from getting wet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqPiF49DZu4

They work beautifully on alloy but by the time you are dry you need to get wet again! Corrosiion sets in.
