Taps & Dies

Just need quite a comprehensive set, decent HSS, course & fine metric, 3 taps per size [ideally], split dies, without breaking the bank. These are only for occasional use but I just like decent tools that will do the job well.

Then for 5,6,8,10,and 12mm in both pitches,you're looking at starting around £370.

Cheers, IF that is the case I may have to lower my sights a little. Just cannot justify that cost for the intended use.

tracytools its in the link section under workshop tools cheap but good quality machine mart have a metric set about 40 quid ish hss there a half decent set

I too have the machine mart set- part metric and part UNF with a few pipe threads (which I've also used over the years), it's been fine for general cleaning out of threads etc.

You can also get taps and dies from auto jumbles, thoough you'll have to wait till car show season starts again in the summer.

Decided to go for the Sealey option at this time and see how it goes. For £65 delivered and a lifetime guarantee worth the risk. I will, as suggested, also have a look around the auto jumbles next year.

What's the benefit of the split dies?

Three screws on the die holder...two hold the die in place - the screws line up with small recesses in the outside of the die. The third, centre, screw locates in a slot in the die. Screwing it in tighter opens the die up slightly and makes a tighter thread. Slackening it off makes a looser fit thread.

We have a big box full of weird sizes/imperial/special taps that are no good to us. I can have a look Monday, see what there is?

Can I just put a shout in for autojumbles- there is often a good range of taps, dies and drills for sale at these events, often old stock from traditional manufacturers (seen a lot of old Dormer stuff about) at good prices. Obviously, due to the nature of the events, there is no guarnatee you will find what you need on the day, but it's a good way of gradually building up a selection over time.

The best autojumble I have been to is at Newark showground- it can be worth travelling for if looking for a few things. There are also traders who can supply gas if you look out for them.

Metric fine comes in a range of pitches. If you need one for a certain job check the pitch. Tap thread diameter increases from taper to bottom tap and that is the reason that dies are split to give less stress to the cuts, open it up make the first cut and then finish to size. Don't forget to break the chips before your tap jams up.
