Exactly. It’s not going to hurt the tap. You only need one set then.
It’s not like using posh ck gas lenses to weld galv

The taps are definitely sad when you do that.

Plus who only wants one set of tools??

I also have "machine only" drill bits. Then a big box of assorted ones for smashing holes in stuff by hand.

I’ve run my taps through just about everything. So long as they get shoved in some gunk prior to a bit of cutting they are alright.

I'm after a new Tap & Die set, Nothing expensive, But good enough to do the job! (Would love to own a Dormer set, But the bank balance can't afford such items). Bought a chinese one off eBay & I've never seen rubbish like it. Got a refund for the chocolate selection box they sent me!

Some odd sizes in there I don't have and I bought my first taps from Tracey Tools when they were in Kingston-Upon-Thames with pocket money wearing my short school trousers! A couple of those on your list were bought then, 7, 8, 9 and 10 x 1mm and have all been used at least once in over 40 years! A collection tends to work around work or hobbies, bikes and cars you will need some odd sizes and they will be rarely used so buy those as and when you need them. Plug and second as a minimum in HSS from the likes of Dormer or Presto etc with quality cutting compound.

M12 x1.25 is a common size on jap cars. I've also seen m10x1 a few times.

Absolutely. It’s all I use as well. Much better on the die if you can take a cut in stages

If I remember right dormer 2 tap sets work out about 70 pence.

Sherwood do a decent tap and die set but you're talking 200+. Buying individual sets is a good way to build a quality set.

M10x1 is a sparkplug thread and 3/16 brake fitting.

The taps I've been getting from rdg tools are not presto. I can't check either at the moment as it's passed beer o'clock

That is the odd thing, RDG and Myford are the same company but Presto is only listed on the Myford site.

It's also the flywheel bolts on most vag engines. I always keep a few handy for blocking off the pipe connection on brake calipers when cleaning and painting them.

if ur really stuck for money buy individually, off ebay but High Speed steel from China....just the main sizes u need now.....remember free post........not the best but not the worst.......these will do nicely until u find the better makes.......
the luxury items are Brit, American German or Swedish made, there are others.......

I needed a special not so long since, a Euro tap was £60, instead bought from China 25....did the job well as a 1 time job....prob never use it again........the client paid......

Having just cut a M14 thread on a motor bike spindle I know the importance of a good quality split die, personally I bought some big job lots of taps and dies and with a load of my brothers when he moved abroad, I have made up my own sets for little cost, I just took out what I needed and sold the rest on, I did start out with an Aldi set for about £10 and managed but its not a patch on the British made stuff I now have, the problem is you are often caught out, the job above I had a die but no die holder to fit it, so had to buy one!
I would buy the cheap set and replace / upgrade when you can, the often appear in the sales section.

I've borrowed this set at work and was AMAZED at how well the die cut (M10) extending the thread on an M10 Gr8.8 bolt for the simple reason the dies aren't split:

To me that seemed at odds with everything I was taught as an apprentice. The dies and stocks also have 5 dimples/screws rather that the 3 I'm used to. Just a smear of Trefolex and I extended 14 of the things with incredible ease. Don't suppose it would have been as easy on a 10.9 or above...

Split dies aren't a necessity. I've used the hex dies plenty of times in the past for cutting threads, and never had any problems. I simply prefer split dies as especially with older bolts, you can't always guarantee they were cut exact, so being able to expand the die slightly saves removing too much metal, in some cases.

Silver steel and some stuff stainless I have only been able to get a good thread with split dies to avoid tearing threads.

Yikes! Over 15 quid for a 1/4" UNC die. Looking at my drawer full of quality taps/dies picked up over the years I see well over £1000- fruit of lots of boot sales.
