Tap & Die Set

I'm after a new Tap & Die set, Nothing expensive, But good enough to do the job! (Would love to own a Dormer set, But the bank balance can't afford such items). Bought a chinese one off eBay & I've never seen rubbish like it. Got a refund for the chocolate selection box they sent me!

Not a massive Sealey fan, But if it does the Job, Then I can't complain!

M7 x 0.75
M7 x 1
M8 x 1
M8 x 1.25

I do quite a lot of work on bikes & cars, Do you think I've got most of the common sizes covered?

Not really interested in Imperial atm tbh.

I just want a set covering most common sizes & I will buy any random ones I need as & when required

Around £50 notes tops!

M3 - M12 should do me, Most of these sets I saw online seem very similar to each other with just different name labels.

I've got that sealey set you linked, had it for about 8 years. The holders and handles are garbage but the taps and dies have come in very handy for general purpose thread cleaning which is all they are designed to do, I don't use my good taps and dies for mucky car stuff.

If you want to use them to create threads then look elsewhere though the taps will do it I wouldn't expect them to last very long.

You'd need to add a couple fine thread taps to that set if you work on japanese stuff though.

Have a look at the big mannessman sets (sp?) on eBay. I got one and it's been great. Not dormer quality but I buy common sizes as and when to keep for tougher jobs and use the set of cleaning holes etc.

all those sets in blue boxes are Chinese badged up boxes all the same . I have a set of machine mart metric ones (blue box ) the taps and dies are ok but the wrenches are crap .I use presto or moore and wright ones

If you are making threads it's absolutely worth the difference.

If you are cleaning up old mucky damaged threads then any set will do IMO.

I know people preach about buying good taps as and when required and building a collection but that doesn't help you clean up that damaged thread at 10pm on a Sunday night when you've got to use your car the next day to get to work.

For <£50 a cheap set is better than no set to get you out a hole. you can add to it with better stuff as you go along.

At £25 it’s gonna be awful.
Personally I think buying a full set is false economy. For one they rarely cover all 3 taps of each size so cutting threads in a plugged hole difficult to impossible depending on which ones are missing.
2 for something half decent in a full set format your starting money is £100. Despite what anyone else says I’ve used loads of them in the 20-100 pound mark and if you want to cut quality threads effectively and the tools to last you need this budget if buying sets.
Personally I’d say take your £30 and get 2 boxes of 3 presto taps at 12-18 quid a box and do this every time you’ve got paid or have a bit of spare cash and you’ll build up an excellent set over time. I say presto because they are still excellent and a chunk cheaper than dormer. A little set like this was about £15 and it will cut m10 holes forever providing I look after them properly

I do agree with this and do as you say buying a set each payday but running a lovely presto hss tap into a nasty rusty thread just to clean up the first thread is basically abuse.

I don't see it as tap abuse, more wallowing in luxury.

I got a load of old taps in a job lot of tools. But that are of mixed quality and threads. Mostly imperial. So I've been replacing ones that don't cot or are missing with rdg tools taps as I need.

Exactly. It’s not going to hurt the tap. You only need one set then.
It’s not like using posh ck gas lenses to weld galv
