Tap and dies .

Morning guys.
I have charts for tap and die sizes for drills ect..but I can't find a chart for the required sizes of bar to make threaded shafts ... I need to make a shaft with a m22 2.5 tpi thred on it.

There is a really useful app for Androids. It is really meant for CNC threading but it gives you all the dimensions of a thread that you select, the free version only has a few types of thread, Metric course and maybe UNC. The Pro version however has loads more from metic fine to BSP (Gas Rhor), even UNEF. Once you have selected the thread you want you can go to the Tolerances page (Need to go to result page first so it loads the data) and it will give you the Max and Mins etc, also if you select internal thread it will give you tapping drill size.

The App is called CTC-20 and CTC-20Pro, I would suggest you try the free version first to see if you think it would be useful.

i downloaded that, the permissions are civil which isnt something you get too often any more.
it might come in handy and if it dose ill upgrade..

in saying that i have the zeus book here and id use it all the time, i have a pocket ref book as well which is ok but not as smudge resistant as they like to think it is.
its a quick reference imo, quicker than the phone route at times i find.

a zeus book will do that for you but if your making a M22 thread then the size of the shaft for the thread id be 22mm..or a hares breath under it.

Yes I did some research and some great information from you guys... so this would be the case for all threads from small to large. Or just a fraction under size.this to aid the cutting.

A finished metric thread will be 0.1 to probably 0.3mm under the nominal dimension depending on the tolerance required. Most threads you will measure are usually .8 to .86 from the nominal size, so say a M20 it would likely measure 19.86mm, a M6 would be 5.86mm etc There is a flat on the top of an external thread (the crest ) and this is why it is slightly under the nominal diameter.

The thread charts (and that app I mentioned) will give you Max and Mins for the thread diameters.
