Tap and die

I hope you don't mind me posting on here. I am a DT teacher in an academy in Leeds.

I have a pupil who is fixing 6mm mild steel rod into a rectangle bar of mild steel, 30cm x 20mm x 9mm

I have a tap and die set and have successfully turned an external thread using the M6 tap on to the 6mm rod.

Not sure what size hole to drill in the bar ? and also which die piece matches the turned 6mm rod..

Hang on you mean you have turned a thread with the die on the 6mm rod? and you need to know what diameter hole to drill to take the M6 tap

Welcome to the forum.
The tap is the tool used to cut the female thread, the die is the one to cut the male thread.
You need to drill a 5mm hole and the tap will be marked 6x1.0 or similar (6mm thread, 1mm pitch).

Good afternoon Miss.
I am surprised one of the answers above didn't tell you the tapping
drill is generally the nominal diam minus the pitch, so 6-1=5mm.

If you want a reference you could get a poster, I have been given them by tool companies and they brigthen the walls if nothing else.
Having vague knowledge of the thread form and some basic trig is good.

Kids love a good app- there’s a good one from Hague that gives drill sizes, pitches, thread form etc. a search on your App Store should fetch it up

Ended up designing packaging for cereal bars. Waste of my time. Leant more technical drawing in 2 years at middle school.

I learnt about taps and dies in school , the teacher knew all about them , he was called the Metal work master or Sir ,

Well I did my teacher training and that was in CDT (craft-design-technology). Let me tell you, it's not easy! I gave up eventually.

Never mind the actual subject matter, it's all about paperwork and politics, that's what takes up 90% of the time. The 10% of actual teaching is more like mob management, at least it is in London. I got all the troublemakers and ne'er do wells. Then you arm them with knives, saws and hammers and try to stop them killing themselves (or each other)...

Mrs. McDonald needs all the help she can get.

That is quite sad in its self. And I agree the teacher needs all the help she can get.

For me the key to successful teaching is maintaining the pupils interest. A disinterested class will get bored and wont learn, because the become disruptive. I couldnt teach teens though, Id end up in jail or a mental institution. Anyone who can has my utmost admiration.
