I have been tasked to get a new TV for my Dad.
His current set up is a remote recording box with freeview so he uses two remotes.

My views differ from brother in law so it's been treading on egg shells telling him he's wrong. Lol

What I really need to know is from anyone who has or knows about built in fire TV. Does it work off the one remote?

Any suggestions for a 42 inch android TV with built in Fire TV and recordable for replays would be useful.

My Sony TV has android built in with fire TV (plus other) as applications within the software. Works a treat. The only way I can record free view is to hook up a USB hard drive. I would also have to hook up an aerial too, but I only watch streaming video anyway so haven't bothered. My dad has the same setup and loves it because he now only needs one remote control.

Yes he can record TV. He has a USB hard drive plugged in and he has freeview. He records TV using that.

It's a Sony KDL-50W809C. It's seven years old now, so there are probably more up-to-date versions out there.

That's the menu screen. Prime video is the Amazon TV app. Youview is where you record TV channels.

Something you need to know is that almost all TV sets on the market, regardless of badge, are actually Vestel (Turkey) manufactured. They are exactly the same innards as one you can buy from a supermarket for half the price.

The only two TV manufacturers left are LG and Samsung and I have my doubts about an LG model with a single point mounting stand too. A common way to identify a set is to look at the model number plate. Vestel sets have a paper label and four characters of a string of numbers is enclosed in a rectangle. So Toshiba, Panasonic, JVC, Hitachi and all the other quality brands that we knew, are just badges now, to increase the price.

You may come across Cello, who claim to be British manufacturers. Well no actually, they put together kits supplied by Vestel.

Sony are not Vestel but I believe are made in China by one of the factories there. The GUI and OS is appalling, even if you don't care about the Rootkit scandal.

We use something called Funky TV but it installs to a fire stick.
And that is another remote.
Dad is a massive cricket fan but at 86 it's getting harder for him to get out.

But I can't pop into PC world and trying installing it onto one of their fire TV's.

In your humble opinion, obviously. I have no issues with operating my TV thanks! I don't find it appalling.

Yes, the vestel types tend to be the cheap JVC and Sharp etc tellys that look the same round the back. I bought a JVC that failed within a month, so took it back to Argos. Went to Currys and the actually knowledgeable sales person told me about it. That's how I decided on a Sony and will gladly buy another when the time comes.

Thanks for that. Luckily I would buy on price than brand name but its good to have that confirmed.


As I have posted above. I am most interested in if I can install funky TV onto a fire TV I can side load onto a fire stick.

It's not a clincher as I think simplicity is largely most important, but it was when I could use vysor to remotely control a firestick I thought ok I can put the cricket on remotely and all Dad has to do is watch it and use the remote to go back to terrestrial if anything went pear shaped.

Is Samsung or LG any better? Plenty of people whinge about the intrusive bloatware all samsung phones are filled with and cannot uninstall, but again that is irrelevant to the question the OP asked. I'm not saying whether Sony are right or wrong to do what they did, but DRM of music CDs isn't an issue for the needs of a person wanting to record freeview with his TV. Or have I missed something?

It shows the contempt that the Sony corporation have for their customers in general. Frankly I think it IS a big issue and judging by their fall from grace when the scandal broke, so does most of the corporate world. It was also the reason that all their shops closed.

Samsung, I have no comment about, but LG has been a breath of fresh air, spoken as a retailer. I was amazed to get through to someone in customer care, in this country, speaking English that was also truly helpful. We have also had no (not even one) return as faulty.
