Talking of trailers .....

Not wheels but, we were heading into Wales in my mate's Mini making good progress round the lanes (as Mini's do) when a deer shot out of the undergrowth, my mate anchored up and we stopped OK, unfortunately the 2 kayaks on the roof rack didn't and shot off down the road in front of us, luckily they didn't hit anyone/anything.

I was heading off to Rhyll for my Uncles funeral a couple of years ago, with my mum and dad on board when I thought the Disco felt a bit lumpy when cornering. So stopped and took a look. Two wheel nuts gone. It was parked near the train station for a couple of nights, looked like somebody has attempted to nick the wheels only to find a locking nut....

I moved a nut from another wheel, breaking the crap Land Rover wheel wrench in the process until I found a garage in Wales that had nuts, and a decent wrench. We made the funeral with minutes to spare without killing anybody else along the way

Spoke to my friend this morning, she said the wheel was from a small box trailer being dragged by a car on the other side of the motorway, the driver didnt notice the wheel had parted company
imagine the damage it that had been a truck wheel !

Doesn’t bear thinking about, collision speed could easily have been 100mph. Had 1/2 a brick come through screen once from between the wheels on an 8 wheeler that had come out of a site, luckily it was right in the middle and came to rest between myself and passenger, that was scary enough.

A couple of villages away a kiddie got killed walking to school when a wheel came off a modified land rover, very sad.
Years ago on the M1 the big metal retaining ring came off the wheel of an artic when a tyre popped and I just managed to avoid it

I collected a Mercedes sprinter off the road that had been hit by the wheel of a truck, the truck was slowing down coming into a roundabout when the wheel broke free and hit the sprinter as it was exiting the roundabout so the speeds involved would have been quite low. It hit the front of the van and crumpled the chassis leg back a few inches, luckily there was nobody injured.

Many moons ago, dad was driving the old fergie down the hill next to farm and half shaft snapped. He was pulling a trailer so didn't notice anything until wheel and other related bits went past. Fortunately it had more or less stopped by time it got to the wall in front of the post office.

This went bang at 60mph, luckily twin axle Ifor box, single axle or caravan could have been quite serious.

Thankfully we were on a quiet road and weren't travelling at speed when the rear wheel bearing suffered a total failure.

Sometimes I'm quite thankful of Land Rover's floating axle design. For that to happen (wheel off) you'd have to have 5x M10 drive flange bolts, two 52mm and a tabbed lock washer fail (and that's per wheel not the whole vehicle!).

Edit: maybe just the two 52mm nuts and tabbed washer thinking about it. Even then you'd have to snap the brake caliper bolts / bracket (both substantial) and / or a half shaft for it to come out.
