It’s not just trailer wheels that need checking, we had a wheel off of an artic land in a field next to our house , the artic stopped 3/4 of a mile back up the A604 from where the wheel ended up after jumping a ditch and a hedge. I hate to think what could have happened if it had traveled 20 feet t hurt her along the road before jumping

Don't just check the wheel nuts but also the security of the spare . I had a trailer spare wheel wear its way through a 3/8 bolt and go dancing down the m4 . On the third bounce it trapped itself under the central Armco. The most frightening 15 seconds of my life as the oncoming traffic was solid coming out of lunnon. I put the wheel in the boot and drove quietly away thinking if there was a God that was his good deed for the day.

I was driving out of London on the A2 about 30 odd years ago in my old 110 ( before they became 'Defenders'). Three lanes solid traffic 60'ish mph when out from under the car in front of me came a wheel, where it came from I've no idea. The wheel went under the Land Rover thumped the underside two of three times and disappeared. Looked in the mirror no disruption in the traffic behind, I guess everyone avoided it
Guess I'm old-fashioned, but I don't think the Police should be releasing publicity shots.

Driving home from college in my defender when I was an apprentice, was intrigued by the Rythmic thump-thump-thump coming from the front end. Parked up and realised there was only two nuts on the passenger side wheel and they were finger tight. Robbed one off the remaining wheels and drove home carefully. Mentioned it at college the next day and one of the lads piped up with “oh I saw someone mooching round your truck in the car park, but he scraped when I walked towards him. Thought nowt of it”

Stuff like that is already in the public domain as it happened on a busy motorway. So if the Police don't put it to good use as a warning, some rubber necking tosser will post it on social media for likes.

One of my elderly neighbours was killed in 2007 when a wheel came off a agricultural trailer and bowled her over. She was walking her dog (which was ok). Big court case about it.

Many moons ago we had a wheel come off one of our trucks, the driver was told to bar it up when he got to the job and didnt. That fell off on the return journey going down the onslip of the motorway and did similar damage to a £500 car on the other side of the road. Nobody hurt, that cost our insurance company north of 30K, claim was made up of hire charges, personal injury claims( there weren't any) and vehicle replacement. Can get a bit spendy.

Many yrs ago I lost a new Weller wheel off the back of my LR Series 1 V8, the back dropped slightly to the off side, then the wheel went past up the road, luckily the road was empty apart from a motorcyclist who saw it in time as it veered off right to the safety of some daffodils.
The wheels were the old type of Weller with flat stud holes, and soft new paint, should've re tightened them sooner!

I'd agree with you for most stuff like that.... but I think that photo might make people check their wheels when they wouldn't after reading about it
