As I said...what a Boss.No... It is good business.
A few hard and fast rules - for employing people.
1. If you give someone a job - there has to be a job there for them - no silly little flexi contracts - what you are looking for - is someone to turn up and keep turning up - so you need to be offering an employee a full weeks work for a long time.
2. Wages - if you pay a little bit more than other local firms do - the job is worth losing - this will stop people playing up too much.
3. No micro supervision - if you give someone a job to do something - let them get on with it.
4. People are not robots - things go wrong. When something goes wrong - stop focusing on what went wrong - just focus on what is gonna be done to put it right.
5. Cutting people some slack for personal problems at home is part of employing people - they have a life away from the work place. This needs to be acknowledged.
Another point I gotta add is: Some bosses sort of get off on being in charge. Drop this attitude. Your employee is just selling you their time in hours for money. That is the deal - there is two sides to any deal. Also never forget - one paper round is one lot of money and two paper rounds is two lots of money. If an employee is doing loads of work - they are gonna expect more money - this is just human nature.
If you turn up - do what is required - personally I really don't much care about anything else. As long as the work you are getting paid to do - is getting done - why would I be interested with any of the other trivial stuff. Most of the time - I very little idea where my staff are and what they are doing - the work is getting done. I am not be being burdened with it - which frees me up - to do my job...
Some people always have problems with staff - others don't...
I am so anti - trackers on vans - cctv in the workplace it is unreal. I can't imagine how anybody would think this sort of thing is a good idea. You give someone a job to do XXX in a day - make it clear that is what is expected to be done in a day. Let them get on with it....
Just to sum up my attitude to staff - one of the young lads years ago went to prison - ****** up fighting in town on a night out. He was living with his Mother - the week before his release - his Mother came to my office - asking if he could have his job back - as she was worried this would be a turning point in his life. I agreed - he started back at work - the day after his release. He still works for me - all these years later - he is now married with two kids. To be honest - he is a hard working lad who just gets on with it... Why would I say no?
