I watched a good programme the other night night about the raising of the costa concordia from the rocks off the italian island.
the amount of work was incredible building underwater frame for it to rest on bolted to the angled rock making a huge steel floating 'neckbrace for the overhanging bow etc etc then there was the air tanks that bolted to the sides to refloat her to tow away to be scrapped.

Worked out quite an expensive wave to the islanders eh !

just been reading a report by some engineer that reckons it could have been salvaged much quicker and cheaper using simple but huge pontoons instead of the complicated sponsons

Yeah I reckon the pound signs started spinning in the salvagers eyes as soon as this story came on the news!!

I always wonder why they could'nt use the likes of air bladders that could be inflated inside, the type used for rolling ships on for beaching / launching ships etc expensive yes but also reusable.
Also I think they would have bought quite a few for a few £ million then they could use one to insert into the captain where the sun doesnt shine, then inflate.

seeing the ship in the dock there puts its size into perspective,

the captains former lawyers had tried to argue that the captain had, " fallen into a lifeboat" and had not abandoned the ship,.....priceless...

I saw this one in Rhodes harbour last year and literally drove round the corner on my quad and not being able to stare properly (the driving there is a little hairy) and thought.------ Oh they have built a hotel on the dockside and I even thought "that went up quick from last year !!!"
its a little larger than the costa but to stand and see it the flesh is incredible. I cant find my pics atm to explain

Design and construction[edit]
The fourth of five ships in the Solstice class, Celebrity Silhouette was being constructed by Meyer Werft at their shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.[5][6] Celebrity Silhouette is built to the same design as the preceding three ships.[7] The completed ship is 319 metres (1,047 ft) in length overall, with a beam of 36.8 metres (121 ft), and a tonnage value of 122,400 gross tons.[8] Celebrity Silhouette carries 2,885 passengers, 35 more than the past 3 ships.[5] 90% of the staterooms have outside views, and 85% have verandas.[5]

The vessel's name was publicly announced on 21 December 2009.[7] The ship was launched in 2011.[7]

Amenities/facilities[edit]
Celebrity Silhouette and her sisters offer a wide variety of stateroom categories, including Celebrity Cruises' signature ConciergeClass and the new AquaClass.

Facilities aboard Celebrity Silhouette include:

• The Lawn Club, a country club-like activity center on the uppermost deck, with a half-acre of grass.[5]
• First ship in the fleet to have a grill at The Lawn Club called Lawn Club Grill which is in place of the glass blowing theatre featured on the first three Solstice Class ships.
• First ship in the fleet to feature restaurant The Porch at the Lawn Club which is also in place of the glass blowing theatre featured on the first three Solstice Class ships.
• First ship in the fleet to have The Alcoves, verandas at the Lawn Club
• First ship in the fleet to have an Art Studio at The Lawn Club.
• First ship in the fleet to have The Hideaway
• The Celebrity Silhouette has 12 restaurants
