Talk to me about magnetic chucks. I'm thinking one would be a good thing to have, primarily for the mill but also the drill.

I'm thinking something along these lines, then I could fix the vice in any position.

That would be about the right size, but would a rectangular one be better/more useable?

How about pricewise? That seems to be about the going rate for the 'lesser' models?

If any of you has a redundant one lying in a drawer somewhere I could be interested......

i'm lucky enought to have 2 oblong ones......largest about 500mm, but soooooo heavy.......was a gift from a retired friend.....
shame really as they dont get used that much....

Get a one with a hole in the middle,you wont damage your chuck if you drill into the hole.

The only machinery I have used with a magnetic chuck is a surface grinder where the cuts are quite light, thousands of an inch.

Things can move on a mag chuck when using a surface grinder f you are not careful and think about what you are doing, that's with the very light pressure from a precision grinding wheel.
I cant see a drill or milling cutter doing much more than starting its cut, before turning your work into a projectile.

I've seen them fitted to lathes. It's all about the mass of material and flux density. Not all magnetic chucks are the same.

I intend to use a vice for the workpiece(s), vice held on the magnetic chuck/table.

That might work if the vice has a large flat well-machined area as a base. Do you have any de magnetising gear? You can get manufactured units that are flat with specially formed coils or you can make your own tunnel style with the coil from an old induction motor with a lamp or something to limit the current flowing in the coil, without it will quickly burn the coil out.
