taking that step

hi just general question when do you take that step to take someone on?? getting busier all the time and got to a stage were im thinking right road to take do i out source some of the work?? or do i take someone on? there pros and cons with all. and people on here im sure have had similar times? or were do you look for people is there somewhere that you can get college leavers? thanks for any advice

Do you have the time to babysit a college leaver or does your workload warrant an experienced fabber who you can just leave to get on with the job?

outsource the work for now and see how it pans out. i dont employ anyone on a full time basis just subcontract then when times are quiet u have no outlay /after a year see how the jobs have worked out monthly and take it from there

all good advice that sounds good i new these times would come up just dnt like doing things myself but you cant do it all lol. there is better and more efficient equipment that would help and save time.

I would be another that subs work out, Jobs like Folding, S/S work, and some Machining, along with design and drawings. I used to attempt to do everything but came to realise that concentrating on jobs you can do well is far better than trying to do everything.

The problem however is you can and will lose control of certain jobs, and also paying subs when a finished job could be 6 months on (cashflow)..

Once you start to employee your mindset must change, organize people well, don't expect them to know what to get on with next, and don't expect them to have the same drive to push the business forward, however well managed and well motivated staff, will start a job at the beginning of the day and finish at home time, expect this and nothing more nothing less. Someone plodding on with one task (no distractions phone ring clients to meet, jobs to price etc etc) can get through allot of work in a day.

There is good and bad reasons for both.
