Taking card payments

I've just ordered a "SumUP" card reader.

£20 outright payment for the reader.
No monthly fees, no minimum turnover.
1.69% transaction fee.
Takes contactless payments, but only does "in person" payments - can't take payments over the phone, for instance.
No built-in SIM card: interfaces via an app and uses phone mobile data.
Perfect for carboot sales/market traders/tradesmen(which is why I'm after one!)

They seem to have good reviews, but compared to the last one I had, it seems very cheap?

We use one of these in the shop/cafe at the heritage railway I volunteer at. We've had no issues with it and they transfer your funds pretty quickly. Just make sure you keep the app updated and you should be fine.

I use izettle, for cardholder not present I can send them a link to pay online

I think the fee is similar but if i take over £2k it drops and i get a rebate

Stripe is good for online, low fees but takes about 10 days to get money in your bank

Didn’t need it with usual customers but dead handy for the ‘I ll pop up the cash point and be right back’ brigade trying to knock you ‘don’t worry pal I take card’

The prices have gone down a lot since 2012! I got one from worldpay, and it was 1.2% + £20 a month reader rental.

Anyone got any experience with the PayPal card reader option?

I wouldn't trust anything to do with my business through paypal

I us the Square option. 1.75% with no other charges. Allows "customer not present" but the rate increases to 2.5%. Card reader is half the size of a credit card and about 3/8" thick. It allows contactless as well as normal transactions. A great improvement over Worldpay Zinc, who seem to have completely lost interest in the service.

There is a benefit to recommending someone to Square, you both get £1000 turnover free of transaction fees.

I use square too & with the £1k fee free link I dont often pay fees at all.

Prob the best option for card holder not present transactions as you can take payment there & then on the phone.

Also one of the fastest to pay out & if you want you can pay extra to get it the same day.

Stripe is linked to my invoicing software, it's mostly disabled except for customers that need it

I use SumUp and find it really good. Money is generally in 2 days after. Each time you get a statement of the charges and what is entering your account. Each month a statement. I have found sometimes it can take a few attempts for a transaction to go through.

Anyone got any experience with the PayPal card reader option?

My dad has one of their readers for shows and such. Seems to work fine. You just use the app to enter price and product description and hand the reader over to the customer to put in their card and pin number. Cant remeber of the top of my head but i dont think (could be wrong) it does contactless.

I've used the PayPal one occasionally over the past couple of years - no problem whatsoever, the benefit is the money goes straight in your PayPal account, and you can perform 'card not present' transactions, but the fee is not the lowest.
