Tailstock Turrets

I recently did a small batch of light production work on the lathe, simple stuff like centre drill, drill, countersink, tap etc. I quickly thought 'theres got to be a better way than this Jacobs chuck'. I have seen a video from @doubleboost using converted MT drills with the tools mounted in the ends of the shank, I like that idea but have recently seen these...

Has anyone used these tailstock turret, are they worth the money or flimsy affairs.

As a more versatile alternative to that one, ArcEuroTrade do a six-station one that is 'blank' with 16mm holes in it, so you can choose the tools you put in it. They sell an ER11 collet holder for it, but If you could find a cheap source of 16mm straight shank ER collet holders, they would complement it well.

I think turret would get in the way and annoying to use if you have drills etc sticking out. How often do the backs of your hands suffer on lathe tools?

I did buy a load of MT and MT2 drills, thinking it'd save efforts. Rarely use them now.

A good keyless chuck ( which mine is chinese, good enough) solves most of the problem. If only I could remember which way to tighten it!

I do not think you would use full-length drills in them. The beauty of them is that for the four operations he mentions (centre drill, drill, countersink, tap), you can set the length of the tools in the holder so you do not need to move the tailstock along the bed. Just wind the quill in and out. For tapping, you can use a holder similar to a tailstock die holder, with a pin to stop rotation but that disengages and lets the tap spin free when it reaches correct depth.

It is a big advantage with a turret to have a lever- or rack-operated tailstock as it saves a lot of handle cranking.

I don't use it all that often as Kram says, but when I do I want it to be as smoother change from one tool to the other. I'll take a look at you suggestion Argoshield, it looks less bulky and adaptable as you say.

I use archer and Asquith quick release tool holders
The tool holder itself is morse taper then takes individual mt holders held with a quick release mechanism
Also really useful on drilling machines and borers without power drawbar running mt tooling

I heard a friend mention the name Archer but I haven't found much on them after Google searching, are they still going or an older manufacturer?

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious but the way I approach this is to have several drill chucks.
If your tailstock self-ejects as many do its quick and easy.

My lathe is an old Kerry, it doesn't self eject, as far as I know and my thinking is MT drills to convert are cheaper than chucks, but thanks for the comment
