Out of interest how do you lap a taper?That wants a slight lap as said, a reamer could make that worse
This stuff?Id get a lapping paste that's designed to not charge the substrate, and just use a cheap MT3 tool.

Im obviously older than you, back in my day Brasso was the kiddie for finish lapping or even jewllers rouge if your were really going for it!This will probably make many angry but!
Autosol metal polish on a good mt very gentle lap then a very good degrease worked on mine
What lapping paste did you use in the end?Here's the tool I made, cut the tang off a new MT4 Arbor and tacked on a bar. You can see from the grey area it's pretty uniform.
