I'm just looking at tablets and have almost decided on a Huawei T5. If it's as good as my Huawei phone I will have no complaints.

iPad if it’s within price range they are by far the best for general web browsing as the intuiative touch controls are well designed and obvious for people who just want it to work. Well supported for apps too, if your using it for shopping I’d always recommend the stores app equivalent rather than trying to shop on their website.
If iPads are out of range then consider amazon devices. Try looking for refurbished gear too my son smashed his 3month old iPad Pro I replaced it with a 1 year old refurbished model for half the price it was as new and he can’t tell the difference.

forgot to to say battery life
if your useing wireless it can deplete the battery more so when your watching films on it
i did both tap screen for forums then watched a film
on remembering its about 3-4 hrs before i needed to plug into a power socket for my older fire tablet bought for 20.00

BUT the like of ebay etc use a slightly dif format for tablets.......
so when I go away I use the tablet for quick browsing but the apple lap tom for proper work like ordering stuff......

samsung good and lenevo are very good for the money samsung are better with updates but the spec you get for a lenovo for the same price i find outways the samsung
i had a lenevo in work a few months back it was a high end one 10 inch screen was £270 new but what a mechine was as fast as my laptop that is no slouch

I’m with you. I too have mastered apple products. Expensive - yes. Restrictive - people say but never prevented me from doing anything I want. But there again I wouldn’t know how to challenge the machine to make it sweat.
Think apple products are pitched perfectly at those (like me) want a bit of tech that’s easy to use, doesn’t go wrong and easy to make talk to other products in the family.
For me it’s a no brainer

Yep, I had the same issue with my old man, wanted a tablet but didn’t want to spend apple money. I was forever getting calls to help him do stuff that I didn’t know how to do myself. Several arguments latter I just got him an iPad and an iPhone. One evenings tuition and he’s away. No more issues at all
If basically for browsing then can't beat the fire 7 in value for money. Frequently on offer for £30-35.
Yes you need to take 5 min to install the play store workaround(some apps not available from amazon store) but after that nothing comes close at the price

If you have or want to get an iPhone, you're probably better off shelling out for an iPad. I have an iPhone and an Android tablet, both work well independently, trying to get them to talk to each other reliably is a real mission. I'll be solving this problem by getting an Android phone next time.

A pal has an iPad and is forever cursing it. It's been back to Apple twice, following conversations with 'gurus' 
who were unable to talk him through a fix over the phone.

If you've got money to burn and are happy to just buy somthing, get an Ipad.
If not, get a cheap android.
The one we just bought for my mother-in-law was £50, has great battery life, and, if she finds that its hindering her from hacking the pentagon, then it's not much of a lost investment if she gets another.
In reality, any tablet will let you browse the web. If you want somthing shiny and made by Apple, then spend the money. If you want somthing that lets you browse the web, buy a £50 one, and spend the £350 you saved on somthing else...

A little biased I would say. An iPad is a different animal to an Android tablet and each suits different uses and different people. It is very easy to compare bananas with pears or mix up cheapness with value for money. The Android platform is great for those who prefer an open OS that you can do lots of techy things with, just like Windows in fact.
The Apple platform is better for those who just want to use the thing easily, without fuss and the malware/tracking laden minefield that is Google.

This debate could go on forever. There are plenty of choices to allow people to do what ever they want at almost any budget
My first ever tablet was an ipad, as I’m not at all techy I’m gonna stick with it as it’s dead simple to set up when new and hardly ever goes wrong, yes it’s expensive but it suits me perfectly as I don’t need a 12 year old to show me how it works.
This week I upgraded my iPhone 8 to an 11. Within ten mins of taking it out of the box it was fully up and running from my iCloud backup. I’m the worlds worst tech IT modern technology person

The original post said "general browsing", not hacking the o/s, syncing to an iPhone, running flight sims, washing up, or anything else.
If you want to spend £400 on general browsing then that's fine with me.
And, if you do want to do all those other things, then, by your own admission, you probably want an android anyway.
(Unless, as I said, you like things that are shiny and made by Apple)

iOS not so much but PC certainly possible.
I'm both. The apple sits unused for the most.
I'm stuck with apples decisions.
With Android if I don't like something I can do something about it.

True but for IT simpletons like me the apple decisions are more than good enough. I can honestly say that I’ve never been prevented from doing something on my apple device.
But I do recognise that I’m nowhere near as advanced as some of you clever folk and your computers
