They're all much of a muchness these days, the main difference being Apple based or Android. Folk'll argue which is the better choice 'til the cows come home.
I use a Lenovo 10" for that, cost me c. £90 from Argos iirc, probably available cheaper now.

Android is the base operating system, owned by Google. Loads of apps and games available.

a non registered kindle fire 7"
allows me to search net and view films on it whilst using a wireless connection
its non hd so hd films cant be watched
used it for so long then i wanted more power and a bigger screen to watch films on
more user friendly and i can watch hd films
so i got another laptop instead 14" screen
between laptop and the kindle/mobile phone i found i got better searches via the laptop

I work in IT, and I do think that people in my industry over-complicate things. Definitely not including previous posters in that, by the way!
If I could speak from experience then I'd highlight ease-of-use, especially for those who just want to browse the web and do general tasks such as ordering from Tesco and Amazon.
There are more complicated routes, which is why I'm not recommending them, but I'm coming down on the megalithic giants: Apple and Amazon.
All day long, I'd pick Apple's iPad, which is what my wife and son have. They start at £399 and, honestly (and there's a whole bunch of other opinions!) they are the best tablet you can buy at that price.
But 400 notes is a lot of money to shell out on what might be a hobby, or a thing that you have sitting at the side of the sofa.
In which case, I'd go no further than the Amazon Fire range.
These range from £49 for the 7" version to £80 for the 8" and £149 for the 10". Note that all are frequently on sale so if you're not in a hurry then just wait, and you'll soon see a ~30% decrease at some point.
The apple devices are genuinely flawless (apart from the price): Apps are pretty much guaranteed vice/virus free and will work together. If you already have Apple thangs (phones, watches etc.) in the house then they are well worth saving up for.
Alternatively, if you're not bought into the Apple ecosystem then the Amazon devices are amazing value for money. Many of these are "ad-inclusive" but take it from me (we have iPads, and a number of Fire tablets) they are literally non-intrusive: When you wake them an ad is displayed and, once you're signed in, no more ads are displayed.
Value for money wise, the Amazon tablets are impossible to beat. Ease of use favours the iPad. Down to you whether the latter favours the latter

Samsung Galaxy tab would fe my choice.
Kindles are clunky and run a very proprietary Android and can't get play store without a hack.
Apple are overpriced and restrictive.

I use a powerful (cost a few quid too :-( ) Laptop with a HD screen for work, including CAD. This is a big heavy beast. Right now this is being typed on my Chrome Book, a very specific make/model and software combination. Non touch screen and very light withb all the stuff on it I need to just keep up with what is going on and buy stuff on the internet. Bought second hand it was a couple hundred quid but one of the best things I bought.
Finally, I bought the Amazon Fire 10" when they were on sale on a Black Friday deal, as Skotl says above 30% off, bargain. That is for use when I go off on my train journeys and for reading books on, I have quite a few now. (Currently re-reading Death in the Long Grass, some books are timeless).
I paid the couple quid extra for the ad free version but whether or not this was worth it after reading the previous comments is debatable. I really do not like ads though and will do my very best to suppress them and go elsewher (on the Internet) if I cannot.
Just to add, I had an I pad but software updates killed it so that was my first and last foray into apple products.
Edited to add I have a first gen Ipod still going strong though.

I have an iPad now, just the basic one and I just use it for the internet, it’s nothing special. I got it cheap when in Oz. For browsing just get a cheap one with a screen the size you want. Do a google for the best entry tablets and go for one of them.
I've just replaced my iPad with a Samsung tablet on contract to 3.
For £20 a month I get more than enough data for my use, and I use it a lot for work. I drive an artic hiab truck and get sent to places where most car drivers wouldn't go, so Google earth and street view are heavily leaned on by me.
The iPad died a couple of weeks ago, after all of 5 years use
, and if someone gave me another I'd tie it to the back bumper of the trailer and tow it down the A1! Absolute nightmare to use, wish I'd never seen it, in truth. Still getting to grips with the Samsung, but after less than a week it's much easier to use.
If you want a tablet that's highly strung, a pain in the rear end, and damned expensive, I recommend an iPad. However, there are much better, cheaper, and easier alternatives...

I have a Motorola g7 power phone with android and think it’s excellent and better than a colleague’s Samsung at over half the price. It’s android and works a treat. I have an iPad and switch between the two without noticing, hardly any difference in reality for me.

That was a helpful comment. The problem as Skotl says is that we tend to over complicate these things. Any tablet in your budget will likely do you proud. If you have no other Apple devices then have a look at the Androids. If you have an Apple product already or like how simple and safe from nasties they are, go for an iPad. It really is that simple.

My old mans a ludite, he was given an android phone and I was being called every night trying to talk him through all manner of issues, the settings are like going down rabbit holes. We got him an iphone and he’s never phoned me for help once and since hes ok with the phone hes also able to use the ipad.
He also got malware several times on the android, something that blows my mind as an iphone user.
If you want ease of use, apple, if you want to download torrents or anything slightly more technical then android.
