Synthetic Painting

Hi,

Ive never really had experience with synthetic paints (spraying) before, and on a few test pannels i have done the paint is coming out more rough then smooth, i havent messed around with thinning too much as the fella that mixxed the paints for me said use very small amounts of thinner with the paint, so for a 600ml cup i put in 60ml of thinner, (10%). could it be worth thinning it some more to get a better flow and therefore better finish?

Just thinking, i could try the heat option, where the paint is left in hot water to thin it down and then try spraying it on to see what results i get with that. Some people i heard use heat and thinners to get a good flow and finish. i'll try both and see what happens!

Havn't used Synthetic for about 25 years as there are much better products out there but i always warmed it before painting.

looks like warming it does help with the flow of the paint, but its still rough to the hand, would it be like this due to it being a primer? will be putting black gloss over the top, so hopefully this will lay better

Wait till the primer is dry and flat it with 400 grit paper till is it smooth. Black gloss will show every imperfection, and scratch.

koool cheers for that, so its normal for the primer to apply slightly rough then? so i'll have to get the primer as smooth as i can before black gloss to get a good finish?

How much air pressure are you running? I just thin it till it feels right, forget this or that %. If it's sprayed too thin and hard out of the gun it can end up as dry spray. And use synthetic thinners, not celly. It's less fierce and slower.

Also you can get brushing or spraying synth, will usually be asked by the guy making it up which you want. Many Landy people brush or roller it.

I haven't warmed it, if gloss you want it to flow out flat and if satin/matt there's just no advantage. Found the synth primer laid/flowed nicely and sanded nicely too.

about 50psi at the gun, was thinking of downing it abit so its less harsh. ive seen people thin it to the consistency of egg white or something like that for the thinning, and yeah im using syn thinners which is what the guy at pps supplied.

was thinking of brushing it on, but some places are quite awkward and it worked out easier to spray the whole area instead of brush it on.

and will be gloss black, so will have to thin that to get a nice flow from the gun so it doesn't spray too hard and fast onto the area. i'll wait for the primer to dry thoroughly sand it back so its all smooth and then go from there with the gloss...hope it goes abit better!

what sort of pressures would you recommend once thinned correctly? using just a standard suction feed gun for this

Try 40psi or less even, e.g I go around 30,35 with satin to make sure it's wet (otherwise it can come out matt).
Also having the gun too far away could make it go on a bit dry.
Thin till it's like milk, runs off a spoon but with some drag.

If you look at the fan as it hits the surface, sideways or at an angle so's you can see it lay down, it should go down as a nice wet covering. You'll see if it's thin / blasted hard / heading towards dry spray.

mixed to milky viscosity, and its coming out at a nice even spray and good covering, cheers for your help, appreciate it!

When you buy your paint ask for a spec sheet which will give you the thinning rate at different pressures. I used some urethane alkyd enamel paint on a van for my brother in law and it went on fine at 30% thinners. It took a long time to set but was a nice finish with no aftercare.
