Synthetic paint on car

Hey guys!

I made a big mistake... I paint the load (interior) of my van with a synthetic anti-corrosion paint... Very stupid, now I know! Not proper paint for cars...

Now after 1 month still smells and I get headache everytime I enter in the van.

So I sand it all the best I could... I would say 70% of the paint came out but is still some left and still smells!

Now a professional car painter said he would paint it over with anti gravel coating (proper for cars) and he said the smell will be over as well as the hazardous fumes that are giving me headache!

I need to do something because after sanding some parts are bare metal now and starts to rust!

wash it off with paint thinners ...then recoat with something that cures properly like raptor

Put an isolating paint over it, most car paint factors supply this.

Almost nothing will go over synthetic.

correct ....you will end up cleaning that off when it fails you

mask and some old clothes....can of gun wash and a pack of red scotch pads

Take a dog for a swim and the chuck it in the back of the van, that will sort it.

Not fair to the dog, just have a few home brews and a iffy curry and sit it out.

Plus, that means no one will steel the van.

Spilt a whole spray bottle of deicer in a mini one winter, had to drive the bloody thing with the windows open everywhere, freezing my nuts off till the smell went away.

Isolating paints are for just that scenario and they do go over synthetics, hence why car refinishers use them, not cheap but cheaper than a respray, many vehicle refinishers stock different types and brands, speak to them first to get the correct type.

Clearly you have never used them. Many of us are paint professionals, not armchair experts and so speak from painful experience. A multitude of issues arise, not just the pickling. The correct advice has been given from many of us... strip it and start again.

I ruptured a line marking paint was awful that was in my van with bulkhead.

it does what it says isolate i painted my van with celly and it started to react sprayed it with isolater sealer and sprayed over it fine the downside is if u have to sand and touch up anywhere it needs to be sealed . if a cars been painted with god knows what dont buy it only did it once

I used an isolator and it was as descibed as above ..............rubbish.You can't thin it so it goes on really rough, can't sand it, where it does go on smooth the paint will be layered up so thick that give a few weeks/months it cracks and you then have to strip everything, easier just to strip it initially.This is from making the mistake of using it a few times on different jobs.

Yep. All of us who do it for a living have been there and have learned by bitter experience. I think I still have a 30'year old can of Barcoat somewhere!

Can somebody tell me what a synthetic paint is and why it is so stinky? I seem to recall that the old gloss (oil?) paints lingered longest. I only think in terms of water, solvent and strong solvent paints now.

Nice incorrect assumption.

You got decent quality isolators and pure rubbish, Lechler used to do a good range for differing paint materials but environmentalism seemed to put paid to it.

These days its chemical dip the lorry cabs as its easier, much quicker, and as my guy has a rotating jig it ensures the stripping acids get everywhere with no trapped air bubbles and missed spots and he can do steel and aluminium cabs.

ive been in the trade for some time and never seen a professional use it , we ordered some in once for an old beetle that had many paint jobs on it , then ended up paint stripping it

I've used it with no problems, if you ended up with a rough finish I was down to something you did or didn't do

That's the problem with synthetic takes a really long time before it's hard all the way through, horrible sticky stuff
