Well, I think it's safe to say that my level of willpower is practically zero. So much for not getting any more vices. Picked these two babies up yesterday.

Both York, an 80 and a 100A.

Really is a shame when you see good gear that has fallen on hard times. Cleaned up will probably still be a useful tool

Yost made vices like that or it could be one of the many cheap Chinese copies of one. Is part of the main jaw missing in that last photo?

I'd chuck the whole thing in an electrolytic rust removal tank for a week and then give it a pressure wash before making my mind up on that.

EDIT: Actually that's toast, the main slide is cracked all the way around isn't it? That's why the jaws are out of alignment.

Yes it is cracked all the way round..Just saw it and threw into my boot ..LOL..It swivels or did swivel on the base as well as the jaws ..Didnt know if it was worth restoring for someone. I dont think the main slide is cast or not .Doesnt look like cast so could probably repair ok

Would be unusual for it to crack like that if it wasn't cast, surely it would have bent first.

I think I would just stick it in a an electrolysis tank and leave it for a week to see what it looks like with the rust gone, if nothing else you'll have some jaw plates and a lead screw out of it. That design of vice is normally used as a general purpose bit of everything type vice.

I havent the time to do anything with it but thought it a shame to leave it where it was ..Just go on the scrap pile Im accumalating

It is a cheap copy, worth its weight in scrap. Sorry.

Shame you didn't find that a few weeks ago. That could have gone on the pile with the others. It definitely appears to be one of the import jobbies, but even if just for bits, I'd be tempted to hold onto that instead of scrapping it.

Thought I'd pop this in its own thread rather than peeing Norm off any more. So much for me not having a fiddle with this vice until I'd got other stuff done. An obligatory mug size comparison. It's a 4" vice. Pipe jaws are approx. 2-1/2" wide. Top notch!

The cylinder parts stripped down.

The base/body after derusting.

The base/body has had its first coat of paint.

Thought that seeing as I had it all stripped down that I might as well go the full hog and paint it, seeing as there was nothing resembling a notable amount of original paint left on there.

Had a devil of a time getting the jaws off. Some of the securing screws were rusted to their bolts, and the pipe jaws has each had one smooth face screw added, so that they couldn't be easily removed. Had to drill the countersink head off by drilling down through the heads with a drill bit equal to the shank diameter, until I could punch them from the shank.

You jammy devil. Nice one. I can fair imagine that one being a best, at 6". The Parkinson's/Samsonia's are my favourite of the vices. Seem to have that little bit of something which even Record & Woden couldn't match. Plonk a photo up. Like dangling an invisible carrot just mentioning it without a photo.

just bought a Parkinson’s model f 8a myself.
Is there any connection between Parkinson’s and samsonia as they look very similar.
On the subject, where do you get new springs from.
