Swindens Vice Price

Just bought this off eBay, just wondering why no one else bid on it, yes it's had a fresh coat of paint to tart it up and was quite rusty before the paint job, is missing a jaw and handle but seeing as what some of these sell for am surprised no one else threw a bid in for it

It's worth it's price I guess, if you're after a Swindens. What size is it? Looks like a 4 inch. "Collect only" puts a lot of people off but the clincher for me would be the missing jaw. Without the full set of jaws and the locking handle, there's a fair bit of work to make it a sensible buy-to-sell. Should clean up lovely though for a keeper. They are amazing devices.

80 quid is high enough to deter the casual bidders I think. Maybe everybody's skint right now and they don't wish to speculate. I have to concur with Screwdriver above. A bit of work is involved and the gunk is really off putting.

restored generally means cleaned oiled and painted 60 quid tops for one in good nick that hasn't been touched

The missing jaw is a pain but was going to make some soft jaws instead and can make a suitable handle

Appreciate that collect only puts peeps off but my brother is local so can collect for me.

Will defo need the black paint stripping off but for £80 it was probably worth a punt, cheapest I've seen for a long time but not the billy bargain that I got yesterday

It will do for now, will keep searching for a better one but until then will put it to some use, might not like them and go back to my Record

Yes, the land of online auctions is a strange one. For a month I tried to get rid of a Record No2 for $20, no bidders, had offers for $15 but that was the price I bought it for so I felt better off keeping it. Then I put it on for $1 reserve, and it eventually sold for $42.

Refurbed Record wood vices seem to do well over here, I've seen them topping $200 which is quite frankly ridiculous but I guess if the buyers are there...

Mine was given to me
Sized solid but in mint condition
I made some soft jaws for it
Been in constant use for a couple of years now
The only problem I have had is it is too small
To hold a cylinder head

They really are superb vices. All I would suggest is once it's really clean right down to the castings, have a think about leaving it raw, especially with your older version. They really do look lovely in the nude. Rub them down with boiled linseed oil too. My understanding is that you can still paint over BLO but I guess it depends on the type of paint.

I'd like a Swindens vice mainly because of the options for positional holding, but the prices are ridiculous even for s/hand ones, great if your spending the publics money to supply the MOD's workshop.

I'll just keep looking for a cheap one to come along.

They do look a very handy vice, but i wouldnt part with that money though - especially with being very Yorkshire.
We have a couple of Record 25's at work - huge things that came to us as old stock, but brand new in their original greased paper dated early 70's IIRC. Don't get much use but there when we need them.
