It's no good for you, I suspect, but the swarf j get is splinters rather than curly strings.
Just today I checked the bag of my Henry hoover. It was empty apart from about 4 or 5 lumps of somthing.
Everything else (as in many multiples of the Henry's volume) was in the barrel under my eBay China special cyclone unit.
I think it would work for cutlet shavings, but just you would need more of a shop sized extractor, but, for the alluminium splinters that my mill throws off, I'm astounded that virtually nothing makes it through the cyclone into the hoover.

The long curly one are not the problem, its those short tiny ones, needle type that get thrown around are the problem. It's been hot here a few days, so with sandles on in the workshop, drilling milling and grinding with ceramic flap disks. The needle has been busy every couple of day digging these thing out of my hands and feet
. Most of the time I don't even know when they get stuck in, but you find out walking and gripping things. Some are that small that you can't even see them, but boy can you feel them. Some you just have to leave till they fester up, break the skin and you can squeeze them out. I still have four in my left hand, two in my right, dug three out of my left foot last night and have three in my right that arn't bothering me at the moment

It dawned on me last night why it seems to have worsened.... I through out all the anti fatigue finger matts a while back, great for standing on for long periods, and held the swarf. Problem was they were past their best 10yrs ago.

There is a video comparison of fatigue mats on YouTube somewhere against alternatives such as duckboards and one shop IIRC went with duckboards because they flex and move small amounts when you stand on them, which over the course of a day is better for your feet.

I had a pallet in front of my lathe for a while, the swarf dropping through was nice but when I took it up I found tools I didn't even know I'd lost.
