just out of interest really but does anyone have any knowledge of regestering a vehicle that falls out side the plg class, l know what an iva is all about having put 2 vehicles through an sva, they even measured how much air came out the heater vents to ensure it was capable of demisting the windscreen
never bothered on the second one but getting back to some thing like a lawnmower or light tractor surely the iva cant be applied as a lawn mower has lots of sharp edges on the front
l cant find a constuction and use set of regs for a agricultral vehicle either, it just seems to be the normal c&u but at the bottom of each section it says "dosent appy to vehicles in the agri class"
so lets say l built a light tractor. that is a single seat under a ton and 20 mph max do l just go and fill a form in and get a reg number, do they want to see it ? do they want to test it ?

no no l am definatley building an agricultural vehicle, not trying to side step anything, not even sure it needs to be road regestered l could always move it around on the back of my transit, but l was just curious what was envolved,
trying to get accurate info is hard work there is a lot of mis information or perhaps not very clear info around, some quote 1 mile from base ( which is what l think an agri quad has changed to ) while other are quoted an average of 7 miles a week, big difference there as my 2 fields are 3 miles apart

i can ask my mate as he has a 700cc raptor registered as PLG and he commutes in summer and bad winters to work on it

dont think that will help as a quad is a known item with type approval and he is in plg, l have an oddball that wants to go into agricultral class

nip down to your local vosa testing station and ask the guys in there? They may be able to point you in a better direction

lets say you built something like the tractor below, could it be regestered for road use ? if so would it need to go through a test if so what sort of test ?

it might fall under the vehicle not used on public highway (tractors, plant etc) and i would presume not testable under iva as most things would be not applicable. might be worth a letter to VOSA and speaking to NFU or one of the small scale manufactures or importers to see how they do it.

Iv just had a look online and as you mentioned its a serious mine field of miss information

After reading so many contradictory posts id just stick it on the transit and save yorself the hassle of trying to get it done buddy

this is going back a bit but scrapheap challenge did a thing a few years back where contenstants had to build and register a vehicle (wacky races) and there was a group of farmers and they didn't have to get the vehicle tested as they were able to register as "agricultural show vehicle"

The class you will want is limited use,so you can have no mot or tax(the disc is displayed,but free) and all youll need is insurance but just because theres no mot,any vehicle on the road has to be safe,ie,good tyres,brakes etc.White derv will be needed though,unless its a tractor thats only used for argicultural use.Youre limited to 7miles per week I think,and thats between land you use, instead of one 7mile direct drive.(Ofcourse,the vehicle needs some number plate,so thats where the problem arises if you dont have one,you'd have to get Q plate from the dvla)

Why would it be a Q plate? Id of thought it would either be issued on the points system and given an age related plate or reg'd as new.

where do you get this 7 mile per week limit for an agricultural vehicle, depending on what your doing, agricultural, forestry, or horticultural, there isnt really a "limit" on the miles, there is an operating radius, but this is quite vauge, again depends on so many variables, and as for a "q" plate, they dont exist any more, youll either get an age related plate, if you can provide provinence, or a new plate. round here there ae a lot of quads registered as light agricultural vehicles, the farmers favourite transport, along with utv's, again no problems with them.

ooh its a minefield, many conflicting versions of the rules,
the 1.5 km a day or 7 miles a week would seem to apply to any vehicles that are taxed as " limited use " as the farmer next door does with his old fiat van, he uses it to go out check the sheep carry the odd hay bale that sort of thing and white diesel only.
the agri class for tractors dosent seem to have a restriction on mileage and red diesel is ok assuming you doing something agricultral,
quads were reshuffled recently into their own class and are restricted to 1.5 km a day, you could regester them as an offroad tractor perhaps but then you are limited to one seat and 25 mph, all the quads l have seen will do more than 25mph and there fore not legal in that class ?

So,theres no such thing as Q plates anymore??What about scratch built cars?Or cars built up with other vehicle parts where it cant be proved what age it is?What number gets issued then?I thought the vehicle in question was a homebuilt machine,thats why i mentioned Q plates,,and as for the radius,yes,for limited use class,there is a limit per week on how many miles the vehicle can travel.I THINK its 7 miles,,but,,this is taking into accout land i may use ,,and the journey is "hopscotched" if you get my drift,between land or fields a-b-c,NOT direct a-c.Round this neck of the woods ,many use it,I myself had an old van for this,its a very grey area,but thems the rules i know,and also,red diesel is a no-no.Same as for a tractor used on the roads,hauling a digger on a trailer for example,white fuel has to be used for commercial use,,red on agriculture

Q plates are still issued to vehicles of indeterminate age, ones built from parts from multiple donors. Red diesel can be used as long as duty is paid on it according to my brother in law who has a couple of machines. PDF
