Rustbusters who supplied the tool just phoned me to say that the tool works for them and gets back to bare metal, so god knows what I'm doing wrong. They reckon it's that the compressor is too weak but I doubt it. I'll try it with a big bore air hose and the receiver full. If it still doesn't work then it's going back.

I used to have one but never used it much,however it was very air hungry.I was recommended it by one of the best vw painters in the uk as he uses it on underbody clean up.When he paints a car the underside is as clean and shiney as the top so I take it as a good recommendation.

Did you try the polycarbide discs on angle grinder? Very good, like a wire brush cross flap disc.

Did you try the polycarbide discs on angle grinder? Very good, like a wire brush cross flap disc.

Actually on eBay the used prices, when they come up, are only about £100 less than new.

I used the poly discs before, and I'll probably go back to them.

I think washing soda is just an electrolyte, so you get the derusting effect but not the paint stripping effect. I did Google it and couldn't find anyone combining caustic soda with electrolytic cleaning.

I use caustic in my vats. Very little notable difference whether using caustic soda, washing soda or bicarb.

Its difficult to beat a poly stripping disc on an angle grinder and forget a DA for areas like this, took me 15 mins this morning to strip this area and about the same a couple of weeks ago to strip round the windscreen.

Then finish off the corners with your power file.

But what do you do with pitted rusty areas? The poly discs won't get rust out of pits.

Well it depends how bad it is, this bit and plenty more like it, I cut out and weld in new.

If its inaccessible as a last resort I will try some rust eater and if that doesn't work some rust converter and then epoxy over the top.

and a decenT blast pot using sand would remove it in a few minutes including the pitting without removing good metal and give a good etch surface for the paint

So the pits in your first photos are rust free. How did you get the rust out of them?

I'm all for sand blasting but it means removing the car from the garage. I suppose once I have my car dolly built that's no biggie.

Got to say I'm impressed that you got into all those corners with a poly disc. Though I know my cars got rust in places a disc won't get into.

I'm ready to start welding up my chassis. I got my TIG welder out yesterday and relearnt how to TIG weld cos it's been years. Now just start start cutting and welding and to stop procrastinating.

Again for corners I use the B&D powerfile.

As for the car it looked like this when I started on it last November....there was a little rust bubble by the windscreen.

...and now it looks like this, been doing a lot of welding to the sills, floors and inner wings, about 150 hours in and I estimate another 500 to go to finish the job off.
