Maybe someone knows the answer to this one.....I need to get a very flat surface on some aluminium blocks about 6" square. The blocks will be carrying heat away so I need them as flat as possible with a fine surface finish to get the best thermal interface. I can mill the blocks no problem and was thinking of using progressively finer sheets of sandpaper on a surface plate, if I can find one at a sensible price at a sensible distance, but it occurs that a plate of glass might do the trick. Does anybody know how flat glass actually is? I have a feeling I could get a two foot slab of thick plate glass far cheaper than a surface table, but would it be flat enough?
If I had a surface grinder of course, it would be easy, but that's yet another expensive bit of kit in an already overcrowded shop!
