its all there is unless i want a 40 min drive to most likley find just the same service , everyone else seems to find a good one , but nothing round here

Tbf you have picked a product that they didnt have in stock
Most stuff they do and will deliver in 2-3 hours so when you get halfway through a job and find you need another part you can still get it delivered, fixed and back to the customer on the day you planned
One simple part ordered online could push several days worth of planned work back a day or 2 in a garage

My old boss used to base his prices on what he thought he could screw out of the customer 
Must have not liked the way you looked then.
Are you an account holder with them? That makes a big difference. It's rare dingbro (Scotland only?) can't beat online for same quality with bonus of delivered straight to the workshop.
I did that last time i got a silly price in the local place , I was all "ive got a trade account btw."
Price did go down.

All of our local small motor factors have either gone to the wall or been swallowed up by the big boys.They now want pretty much full retail and more for everything they sell, all the gear is held at central stores with nothing on the shelves other than basic service items,use the special order in for next day ploy as an excuse to rape you. Needed a UJ the other day, gave them the reg, computer says no, gave them them the size and computer said yes, shouldn’t have to train their staff for them

I do have to ask though - when someone comes to those of you running a business, with no info, incomplete info, wrong info - do you spend time, costing you money, trying to work out what they actually want, simply supply what they ask for, or apologise as you don't know/don't have what they want, and carry on dealing with the customer who comes in every day/week/month with the right info, pays on time and doesn't come back three times complaining its the wrong bit/made wrong/wrong colour?
I go in, I've done the research, I've got all info I can find, alternatives too, - he simply looks it up - got it, can get it, no chance . . . and I make the appropriate arrangements - he's got bigger, more regular customers to be keeping sweet(er), so I try to make dealing with me as easy, painless but worthwhile to do.

I used to buy in person from a trade warehouse called Regor. Originally it was behind the Man United stadium at Trafford Park and then it moved to a bigger location. I could be virtually everything that was needed and for many years it was worth a monthly trip to the warehouse to stock up on whatever was wanted. I used to work on the prices being around half of what Halfords etc would charge and then add VAT. Thousands of pounds a year were spent there. Mid 90's the level of service & repair stock took a sharp drop and about the same time more gimmicks took over. I then found that I ended up at local motor factors anyway and gave up making the trip to the trade warehouse. Today I use on-line ordering as I can sit here in afternoon, order and it's delivered next morning. I have parts coming from all over the world without any hassle. You can find the parts manuals for most cars on line so ordering on OE number easy even if it's an aftermarket part - from a reputable manufacturer.

Halfords
Sometimes the customer does actually know what they want, and the computer isn't always right.
I was giving my Triumph 2000 a service so I copied the part number off the spin-on oil filter, went in and asked if they had one or could order one.
They wouldn't order using the part number, they needed the reg number.
They then insisted I had to order a cartridge filter for me as "That's what the car should have".
Either the info on their system was wrong or my 40 year old car had been modified since it left the factory - I don't know and I don't care.
Another lost sale for them, and ongoing tale that I've repeated many times over the years.
Not your fault they wanted double im just saying in a commercial garage sometimes you just need that same day service

By the time we had the box off and back on the new uj had arrived and the job was completed on the day planned not stuck on the ramp till the following day
Yes maybe i could of saved a fiver ordering the uj online but it would of made the job drag out!

Seriously, buying stuff off ebay seems half the price of most 'normal' purveyors.
Eg: Aluminium round bar, 1.5" diameter, 12" long, exactly half the price of metal supermarkets web site.
And a dozen other oddball small quantities.
Sorry, I'd like to support local business, but not at double the price to me, just to make money for someone else.

whenever ive been desperate enough to call in , nothing i want in stock , dont know how they keep going
last time i was stuck for a tool , though okay suck it up and buy from them , no stock , website suggests a long wait , ordered a halfords one off ebay for delivery lol , guess someone is buying sets and selling seperate

Its the same with everything , Just been quoted £38 to fit a transit tyre to a rim, place around the corner £20?
Motor factors, well you have to take care as some of the brands are very poor, if you want cheap Autodoc post from Germany, they cost me half the local factor price and same make, they even supplied a gasket I couldn't get from Mercedes for 20p!

I ordered a crankshaft pulley from them they sent me a plastic water bottle ….. I eventually got my money back after 6 weeks and a lot of emails.

I think theres a big difference in expenses for anyone running a premises vs a warehouse box shipper.
I remember looking at shop rates many years ago (I had a crazy business idea)...the rates soon put me off being silly!
Amazon is being infiltrated by ebay sellers who have tagged onto amazon but don't fulfill prime shipping and are often 10 days shipping.Amazon would have had it with you within the hour......
