Support for copper kitchen worktop?

I’ve made a copper top for a bar I’ve got in the man cave. The backing is a standard kitchen worktop and copper was donated from a hot water tank. The sheet is folded over all edges and stuck down with contact adhesive. It’s been on for about 7 years know and no issues. Get a polish with the buffing every couple of years. No dents or dings

I have been messing about with it and at 3mm it doesn't dent from the normal moving stuff around.
If you drop something heavy with a sharp edge (granite chopping board) it will dent or even cut in with a burr on the side of the cut.
Damage like that could be welded back up if required but obviously not if I glue it down to something.

Do you actually use a granite chopping board? You must be forever sharpening your knives.

I put a copper top on the bar at our pub in Albufeira. Used something like 0.5mm and blockboard as a base. The joins and edges were held down with brass strip. Front edge was rolled over a 50mm radius nose Shape was 'L' but with the corner angled at 45°.
Now, it was not a problem there, as the top was polished every morning, but copper tarnishes very quickly. Shows finger prints etc. and at the end of a day would look quite marked.
Much commented on and had a wow factor. People thought it must have been expensive, but back then, not so much. Lasted around 18yrs before wearing through and needing replacement. Heavy use though.

Have you ever seen copper worktops in a kitchen? I should try and find one before you spend money on this.......I know what my missus would do to me if I made copper worktops...and it wouldnt be pleasant

Ss would be the only metal id consider.

It will also contaminate any food left or prepared on it.... that's why copper pans are tinned inside

It would really need to be sealed or varnished in some way to be practical

Also lean on it with bare arms for a while, I did this once in a pub and within 10 minutes I could taste copper in my mouth!
Really unpleasant and lasted for a few days. Some kind of osmosis?

I made a copper splash back and it was a PITA to keep it looking nice.

A classic bar top in France is zinc. Not now usually, but in the language when talking about getting a round in. I visited a bankers wife with some, as she had thought a classic look in her new kitchen might be an idea. One look at the reality and I knew it wasn't what she had imagined. Money wasn't the prob, as THE HOUSE!!! was really nice.

I did an SS table top for a friend's kitchen, as she was teaching teens to cook in the summer, so a bit professional which would require SS all round.

I had a copper plated bike once & that also was a nightmare to keep clean! It ended up with the green crusty corrosion

Practicalities aside, done loads in various materials over the years, zinc, copper, brass, galvanised, stainless... Backing board is usually 2 sheets of 18mm ply glued and screwed together, to give a reasonable thickness.

Brushed copper, brushed finishes are a bit of a pain to clean, anything more than a gentle wipewould ruin the finish I'd think.

There's a pub here somewhere with some copper tables (Possibly The Benjamin Huntsman, if anyone's familiar), they look really good (IMO) but I think they've got a thick layer of varnish or epoxy over the top to stop them getting scratched/going green/making your elbows taste funny.

Can't think of a more impractical material for a table top myself.

I should not weld it but do a jogged joint, tinned.
Go thin and a good flat backer with sanitary grade silicone.
Got to say by the time your done you might wish you just got a good granite company in
Copper isn't such a big poisoning issue every bit of water we drink come through copper and its not like your going to be chopping meat and such without a board
