Watched an extremely interesting programme on forces TV on the development and 40 years of service of the Tornado, or Tonka as its affectionately known. It featured Dave Eagles, the chief test pilot at the time. Saw him a while ago give a lecture and can thoroughly recommend his book. He was one of the more down to earth test pilots and made a young flight test apprentice feel comfortable working with him . With retirement rapidly looming it gave me a lot of memories from the best part of my career when we did engineeringy stuff

When I started my RAF apprenticeship in Jan 1977, the Tornado was still known as the MRCA (Multi Role Combat Aircraft) indeed I can quite clearly recall being in an Applied Maths class when the announcement was made in the house that it would be called 'Tornado'. What is scary is that by the time I left the RAF, the early ones were already going out of service and being used as training aircraft (in the technical school)!
