Super Diesel

Has anyone had any experience of the 'better diesel' such as sold by Shell as to whether it's worth paying the higher price to get better fuel comsmption, or does it not live up to its claims? I keep meaning to try it, but when I get to the pumps either forget of look at the price & think naaah!

I only do about 8k miles a year - mainly fast main roads and motorway and reckon it's worth another 3/4 mpg and hopefully helps keep that expensive particulate filer a bit cleaner. No noticeable change in running or performance. However when I had a V6 petrol motor it was definitely "happier" on the "better" petrol as well as giving better mpg.

There have been a few discussions on the web about chucking in a dose of 2T mixing oil with each fill of diesel. Consensous is that is def improves the milage and smoothness of the engine. Very little needed, like 0.1 %(?)

I was told this the other week. He claims it helps to lubricate the fuel pump etc. and is worth doing. I await more oppinions on this.

It might be even more useful on Supermarket diesel, by repute (cough) a bit short on lubs.
I run an ancient low tech diesel, can't lose by adding a bit of 2T. 330K km on all original bits. Any little helps (considering the alternatives...)

Have just run my first tank of premium diesel on my Hyundai ix35 after a fellow ix35 owner stated they noticed a difference

The low revs were certainly less 'tappety' in noise levels.

Engine felt smoother

MPG on supermarket fuel driving locally was usually 47mpg, the premium fill gave dead on 50mpg over a 54 litre tank full.

The MPG difference could be caused by many factors so that has to be taken with a pinch of salt.

The engine did feel smoother and quieter though.

I don't get the impression there was any super amazing benefits but what there was, I felt were worth the extra £5 it cost for a full tank fill, especially if it was kinder to the engine internals.

Thanks for the info, read about the 2 stroke before, but the vehicle is still under guarantee at the moment so I don't want to try it yet. I am going to try the super diesel next time I fill up ( if I remember) & will report back. The fuel consumption on my Roomster according to the computer can be anywhere between 50 & 65 mpg depending on the terrain & how I drive it, so it will be difficult to get an accurate idea of whether there is an improvement

I just add 50% rapeseed oil (90p a litre at Farmfoods), which makes a big difference both to smoothness and my wallet I wouldn't do this on a modern diesel engine though - that's on a mechanically injected 1991 Pajero.

My eldest son runs his Diesel Mercedes Estate (in line pump) on filtered used veg oil mixed with 10-15% petrol.Starts and runs as a normal diesel should.He has tried every mixture possible in the past, but this is the one he has stuck with for a long time now.

I runa petrol 1.6 16v in my Renault, a cbr600f, a 1200 gsf bandit, an xjr 1300 and a drz438 (bored out from 400) and they always get the 98 octane, cant see the point in moaning about the price, fuel is extortionate so may as well buy the good stuff, only cost a few quid more.

used to run the bikes on 95 octane and I can see a fairly big difference in the cbr and the drz, as they now accelerate smoother, engines are quieter, go further on a tank and are more responsive. don't really notice the difference on the bandit or xjr as they are my long distance tourers so very rarely use all their power unless I go to Germany.

I also have a gsxr 750 track bike (me an a few lads in work part own it) and we fill that will 100/101 octane (guy in work gets it for us) and it makes a lot more difference. compared to normal petrol station fuels this other stuff is like steroids for your engine.

but likely to have your collar felt if your tank gets dipped, I remember someone getting done for it

Not at all - keep receipts to show that you haven't used more than 2500 litres a year. Fill in a form EX103 and keep that in the car should they want you to register as a biodiesel producer. But generally as long as you can show that you're aware of the 2500 litre limit and are keeping records to ensure you don't exceed it, there's no issue. The law changed slightly in 2011 making it easier to run SVO.

AFAIK that applies to homemade bio-diesel, I don't think it applies to shop bought cooking oil. I'm sure HMRC could insist on inspecting your production plant.

it also applys to SVO WVO etc as well as bio as long as you keep reciepts
i also thin mine with petrol

That's not an authoritative forum in the same way the HMRC one is.

SVO is only mentioned once on the HMRC and then in the context of producing biodiesel, not lobbing a bottle of the stuff in your tank.

The 2500 litre allowance is for the final product, whether blended or otherwise, not for the volume of SVO you put in your tank.


From the HMRC site

Products such as fuel system cleaners, injector cleaners, fuel conditioners and biocides are considered to be fuel additives and are liable to excise duty.

I suspect a bottle in the tank would come under this heading.

I'm pretty sure new veg oil is still a big NO NO.Before this 2500 allowance came in for private use, My son used to run a couple of Volvo trucks on used veg oilWarmed and filtered to 5 microns,He had a customs licence to do so, had to keep records and pay 27p duty per litre used,
