Sunburn

A bit of a strange one today. MoT time for my car and a couple of patches were required on the sills so today I lay underneath and migged in the repairs.
I was wearing a tshirt, jumper and flame resistant heavy duty overalls yet this evening I have discovered that I have "sunburn" from welding on the backs of my arms, my shoulders and back!. I only put 2 small patches on and was using the lowest settings on my welder.
Has any one else come across burning themselves despite the layers?

Are you sure? and you were laying on your back and it still got tanned?
Wow....i only get it when i expose bare skin to welding....like welding in a t shirt and the welding sleeve creeping down, when you notice it it's too late!

Maybe someone else had this same problem?

It'll be lying on a cold concrete floor that's caused the pink and itchy skin. Listen to your granny about these matters!

Should go away in a day. Get yourself a bit of old carpet to lie on - makes life slightly more tolerable under a car in this weather.

I think that I have to agree.

To me, it does sound strange that you would get sunburn on your back, given that it was completely shielded from the arc.

It does sound feabile that you could get a burn on your forearms (as Sparkey says, it's not unknown for a sleeve to creep down) but, given that light travels in straight lines, sunburn on your back is hard to explain.

I do know, from personal experienece, that laying on a cold surface can lead to a sort of gravel rash. Perhaps it's a combination of sunburn on your forearms and gravel rash (for lack of a better way of describing it) on your back.

Either way, I hope that the car gets through the MOT.

It would be great to see some pics - always nice to see what other forum members are working on.

Good luck with the MOT - and hope the sunbrun gets better soon; I know from personal experience how uncomfortable it can be.

I only burn if its high current welds..... but try to cover up for everything, there is often a little stripe between glove & sleeve where things have rucked up

Really! If the skin wasn't directly exposed to the arc (and it's hidden by the rest of your body so it will have had no exposure) but has become pink and itchy it will be lying on the cold concrete floor that has caused it.

Doesn't take long for it to happen, and putting something like carpet or cardboard between yourself and the floor will sort the problem.

You'll get spatter on either, but the spatter tends to burn little holes and makes a smell rather than set everything on fire.

The burn on my back is only limited to the top on one shoulder which I would have lifted off the ground in order to weld. My arms were completely covered and not on the ground so I dont see how that can be gravel rash. I was wondering about reflection off the tarmac????

because if the car was up on axle stands you have limited height so want to be as low as possible


creepers are great for spinning yourself around undoing stubborn bolts
