sump repair.

i have a fiat punto with a half corroded sump on the radiator facing side,drain oil and burned some of the grime offf the sump, and did p 38 repair xmas eve in pure desperation, anyway its p***ing out again, so the mechanic in me is tempted to to drop the exhaust undo a ring of 16ish bolts and drop out sump and braze.... weld. on the other side the lazy side of me is tempted to kangoo out the p38 drain oil, burn sump and chemical metal compound, is the lazy option a good mend?

Very common on them, plenty of replacement sumps about. Id be tempted to just buy a new one, £40 and its sorted.

i plan on changing the sump but need a temp job need car by tommoro evening havent got time or a car or a day off to go scouring the country for a sump, oh it gt on my tits this evening, rear shocks last week end brake pads the week before its never ending

It is very common. If you want to replace it, You might have to disconnect the manifold to gain access.

Good clean with angle grinder and all that kinda things then coat of Belzona or Devcon plastic steel.

You would be best using your time replacing the sump have went down that route many years ago not worth the effort.( unless you are selling it on)One thing to think about if burning the sump to get clean metal think of all the crap you will be dislodging on the inside ready to mix with your oil P.S. as for tonight take things in hand problem solved!

I've seen fiberglass used to repair this type of problem , also those wet type exhaust bandages that set hard when dry !!

I've had a cracked sump repaired with... *gasp* soap! Which obviously disappears in the rain. Hahahaha...

My cut and shut ally sump on my toy car ended up leaking while I was at the coast for the weekend. I drove onto a grass verge, the sump was too low and the verge wore away the soft ally weld.

After a bit of frenzied searching online I was recommended to shove a bar of soap in the gap/hole/crack to plug it, then cover it with araldite et al.

I poked a bar of soap at it and to my amazement the leak stopped long enough for me to patch it up with araldite as a stop-gap to get me home.

That was in July, it's still leak free

My Wifes punto did the same thing, had it serviced at a garage near her office, they said it was corroded. I got a sump online for 20 or so quid, but didn't have time to do it. It then leaked all the oil out of the engine just as she got to work 30 miles away from home. I had told her to put the box containing the sump in the boot and go back to the garage, she made it to the garage just as the oil pressure light came on then remembered the box was in the hall at home!

Lift home then 3 days driving my Audi S4 (I was away at the time) while they fitted it. They used sealant that needed to go off properly overnight before refilling with oil.

Once punto sumps start to go they need fixing immediately. Do it properly unless it's being traded in tomorrow.

hi put a sump on my punto 12 8v a few months back due to the same issue. i got a factor one off ebay for £40,spent £10 for it to be sand blasted (done this to a factor sump i put on a ka and it never rusted)
i did have to remove the cat to gain access, you dont totally have to remove it, can just un bolt of from the head and let it hand down alittle, it helped me get a die grinder with a wire brush in there to clean up the block
sump was fine apart from i did need to drill the holes about .5mm bigger as the bolts didnt fit, no problem

also a member on the fiat forum which is a good help

am a ford and subaru tech, on the ford side i see sumps that are rusted and leaking at least once a week, the genuine ones are was over priced, see if you can fab on an undersheild, you wont have that problem again as the salt and grit etc will not fly up and hit the sump

My ex had a '98 Punto, the sump was in a parlous state last time I saw it, god knows how it had lasted so long!

did the chemical metal good stuff, ill buy a sump when it goes again, i heard that up the country they were treating the roads during the frost with urea and nitrogen and we all know what that does to the fert spreader if not cleaned well, i see a lot of corodded sumps and chassis and sills etc .. ... . DIRTY EJITS in that council

Just keep in mind that oil (and diesel and coolantand mud) spills kill, especially bikers. Don't toy with this matter, get it fixed properly as soon as you can.

My daughter's old Corsa B had the same problem, I was filling it with oil and thought I'd forgotten the sump plug it was coming out so fast. I removed the sump and gas welded it then refitted it, took most of an afternoon but cured the problem and saved her a small fortune in oil.

My suzuki's sump was leaking, not available from a factor, X amount from main dealer.So wire brushed it, brake cleanered it, JB welded it and spray enameled it.Cost :- about £12.
Jb weld fixes many things, its always handy keeping some in.
