Suggestions for welding up a 25mm crack

Who knows what will be done to repair fatigue'd area. Certainly a job for a good welding engineer, factor in a few buttering rods, heating bands, pyrometers and, extensive NDT, then fix fatigue'd area, maybe with extra material added to beef up area but, looking at pics, large bolt at bottom, does not lend area for additional strengthening matl to be added?

Maybe a fix is impossible, new brig should have been a tunnel, which would now be operational. I feel sorry for the folks who use brig daily.

I doubt they will weld the crack up at all
Infact I fear it will be more harmful than drilling the ends and leaving it be not that I think that is the cure either
Non of us know the specifics and that will likely be decided by someone a heck of a site more qualified than the likes of me but I bet he can't run a decent bead to save his life
These things move like heck and thier is a lot of maths and such before anyone straps on a harness or fires the cranes up. What a responsibility to hold

Whatever method is used to make a repair (if possible) all avenues before and after any fix, will have to be thoroughly looked at, as any changes may have an effect that can change bridge dynamics?

You gotta remember the dozens of hairline cracks that they have also discovered in the last week, and then multiply that by the miles of seams that they haven't checked yet...

.well there is an election in may so well find out who the fibers blame for not being able to get to work. I used to use the bridge daily for 6 years. Glad I'm not doing that any longer.

Having said that, it does explain a facebook post tonight on the Queensferry local page; "Why are they gritting the Road Bridge?".

Of course, you'd think the fact that there were 87 gritters on the bridge would have been a pertinent point to add to the question

You gotta remember the dozens of hairline cracks that they have also discovered in the last week, and then multiply that by the miles of seams that they haven't checked yet...

I was up on rail bridge mid nineties, there are crack that will no doubt still be there, possibly propagated, that were nigh on impossible to get at. I reckon cantilever is the secret to a long life.

I would have filled the crack and put a 20-25mm plate over fully welded, just to be sure

Over stress cracks plates are rarely fully welded but stitched
Depends on where and what mind but drilling the crack ends and a stitched on plate very commonly the way

At least with a gap like that there's no need to grind a prep on
