Looks like they finally achieved black hole densities in the collider.

One thing intrigues me about this.

When then the two particle streams collide does each go halfway round and then collide or does each go round several times to get speed up?

Also everyone now reckons the world isn't going to end, but surely we weren't in "danger" until the collision occurs, which isn't due for a few days, weeks or months?

I see that the LHC cyclotron is 100 metres below the ground.

If it had been built in the UK it would have had to be a site deeper.

Not to avoid interference from the random particles raining down on the Earth, but to try to stop all that copper getting nicked bu you-know-who.

from what i read ( which I hold very little faith in) they go round a smaller ring to get up to speed, about 99.9% the speed of light, then go into the big ring and get up to somthing like 99.99999952% the speed of light, do about 150,000 laps of the circuit a second and get bashed together when the scientist feel like it. I don't know how much of that is true.

edit: sorry, that 11,000 times round the circuit not 150, 000. still quite a lot though
