The Subaru (2004 Forester 2.0 XT) has just failed its emissions at the MoT. The garage have suggested it is the second cat (this car has 2 cats).

I have tried (Googled) everywhere and failed to get hold of one, as has the garage. I can have one made up specially, but that is north of £400. The part I believe I need is 44101FE030

I was wondering if any of you know of either sources or options? Either a new or secondhand cat, cat repairs (how good are they?) or as I have spare (but defunct) 2nd cat from a few years ago, someone who can weld a new cat in the existing body?

We've just bought a Renault Trafic, so the Subaru is being sold, so I'm looking for a legal, but cheap solution (and fairly rapidly!)

Also did they try the trick of taking it for a good hot and hard blast, and putting back onto the emissions tester while the cat is red hot? It can get a marginal cat over the threshold.

A bit of open heart surgery and reweld (tig) the scar on the top side, out of sight..... .......

It's my usual garage and they will have done everything they can.

Reading various threads I am now aware of a multitude of tricks to get cars passed (I am rather naïve about these things!) and I'd rather not go down that route. If I'm selling it on, I'd rather it was legal (albeit as cheaply legal as I can get!)

Do you have the print out from the emissions test?

Unless the cat is physically failed ie. leaking or visibly ruptured servicing/adjusting something else might be enough to get you through

Just sell as an MOT failure needing a CAT and save yourself the hassle ?

Have you run a bottle of injector cleaner through it yet?
How bad was fail?

Problem is subaru cats are worth really good money weighing them in.

I would cut and weld whatever cat I could get cheap enough in there.
Anything to get a legal 12month ticket on it to sell.

Being that shape looks like a sg5 non turbo forester.
Cat readings would give a good indication as may be just an air leak,

stick the probe in to someone elses car and it will pass

Pay them an extra £50 to swap the "decat over to a cat" for the test and it ends up some suspiciously similar results to the fiat punto next to it

I thought I might have found one on Megazip.net but I was looking at the wrong model - when I typed in the part number it comes up as out of stock HERE . But it might be worth you banging off an enquiry to them to see if they will be restocked in the near future. I ordered some new door mirrors for my Suzuki a couple of weeks ago and they took 10 days to get here from Japan - one was a genuine part, the other a remanufactured item that was indistinguishable quality-wise.
there also seem to be quite a few on eBay when I looked, non-OEM but I know from experience that it’s easy to find parts for a model that’s not exactly the same as what you’re looking for.
