I dropped my pickup keys down the drain in our larder. First thought was magnet and piece of string fine for the first foot. That was plastic, the rest was metal! Next idea was flush it out and catch it at the entry to the tank. Keys never appeared. Long piece of wire with a hook at the end, one scrubbing brush, serveral parts of grating later and the keys got reunited with me.

When I was shopfiiting, we had to clean all the gullies out in the carpark. I set a lad on with the job, made him screen the lot into a skip. He was not a happy bunny that was until he started to finds alsorts; There were keys, wedding rings, gold chains, live 12bore cartridges. And about 200quid in coins.

I use superods at work and made a screw on strong magnet for them came in real handy one day . working on a roof doing an aerial .and dropped my pliers . they slid down the roof in to the neighbours garden bounced off the conservatory roof and on floor the punters were in and never heard it bad news a 6 foot high fence all round and locked gate . good news fished the pliers out over the fence with magnetic rod without been seen . if it had cracked the roof sheet I wouldn't have let on

I watched a guy rest his cordless drill on a nog in a stud wall as his mates dropped a 8' x 4' sheet of plaster board over it and started to screw it in place, I pointed it out and they told me it wasn't the first time it had happened.

I dropped my favorite Bahco adjustable spanner into the bilge of the trawler Girl Elsie right under the engine.
Got it back years later when the engine blew up & had to be pulled out. Wasnt ever the same again though.

why not did it traumatise you due to the loss

Better than leaving it on the cherry picker wheel, only to notice as it slides off and under the wheel. All while 10m in the air

Oh the joys of working in the engine room of an old wooden trawler, everything covered in a black soot of diesel & sump oil, this absorbs all light, add fish juice from sprats, soles & essence of seaweed & dead crab.

Lost my cranked flat crowbar under a wardrobe. Using it to lever the end panel over the fittings and left it under there.
A week later it dawns on me where I left it.
Bought some windbags to replace as it was primarily used for lifting doors while fitting.

Hi, Aircraft toilet tanks are emptied into the 'honey carts' which then dump into the wet tip, periodically they had to be dug out by hand because access was too small for machines. I was talking to one of the older hands who said that nobody wanted to do it but he would always volunteer because of all the same treasures he found (apart from the cartridges).

Many years ago, my next door neighbour had a Gold Star I think it was, he was stopped by the police for making too much noise. The copper proceeded to stuff a truncheon up the exhaust to see if there were any baffles in it ..... & lost it as it slid gently down the upturned exhaust! One copper, neighbour & a couple of mates getting the bike up on its back wheel & shaking it to dislodge it.

I think the thing to do would to have ridden off with the truncheon in. Sergeant... tell me how did you lose your truncheon....... copper, it’s like this Sarge.

The fella I did my apprenticeship used to do this but with a mains drill with a spade bit in, it never got boarded in but it fell on my head one day, thankfully it was the handle end that contacted my head and not the pointy end.

I was out doing my daily job, parked up outside the property, got out the car locked the door and dropped the keys down the drain, spoke to the AA, it was going to cost me a fortune, so went to a local hardware shop, bought a extending rod with a magnet on the end, bought a ball of string 2nd or third attempt caught the keys and managed to get them out of the drain, a quick wash under a tap.

Regarding exhausts in Germany with the APC 432, we used to cook compo (in a tin), put a dent in the tin, put it in the exhaust, with the engine running, when you think its done driver puts his foot on the accelerator and the tin/s come flying out, catch in a cam net because they would be bl**dy hot, open and serve, but remember to point all weapons down the range, some fluids come out like a jet stream and hot.
